Whoa I just heard thunder. That's the first time I've ever heard thunder from a hurricane.

It's rained quite a bit without any breaks. I'm glad this didn't track further west and slower. It's raining just as hard as Floyd did at times.

to add to the other questions - in general what happened to Irene? I am grateful that she is weaker than predicted for all in her path and know that she is still extremely dangerous - but I don't think I have ever seen a system do what she did today so quickly?

Boy this looks like a wet one too. Storm totals of 5-7 inches just from north of the eye in Nexrad. There's a swath of 5-7" three-hour rain rate just south of the coast at Morehead City.

Three hour rain total:

Nope, the 11PM held at 100 MPH Cat2. Where did you get your information from?

My analysis is that there was more upper troffiness in the gulf of Mexico than the models progged for a while there. As such, shear values were higher than expected, and there was probably some advection of drier air into the system by the shear.

As always, will be interesting to read the NHC post analysis to see their take on this. Intensity forecasting is SO frustrating!

at its current movement, looks like it may miss the projected first landfall completely...of course all it takes is one wobble back...

at 4 PM I thought there was no way it would miss Morehead

HUGO had thunder and tornadoes. I agree everything about this storm has confused me after being through a few of them. Wish a met would let us know what they think about the SE instead if the NE being the strongest winds theory is.

Just checking in from New Bern, NC. Steady moderate rain here and winds picking up (around 30mph now). We still have power but we're starting to hear a lot of reports of outages. Also lots of tornado warnings in the area, although none in Craven County yet. I know I posted this on the Mid-Atlantic board earlier but thought I'd share it here too. The link below is a live weather station on the Neuse River about 6 miles down river from New Bern (between New Bern and Havelock). It has constantly updated wind, rain, temp etc. info and, once daybreak happens tomorrow, there is a live web cam focused on the river.

On another note, just in the past 5 minutes, my cat has started going absolutely nuts....He knows Irene is on her way!

hehe, well I kept refreshing the screen at http://wunderground.com and it showed 95mph, but the hurricane symbol sill showed cat2...Anyway, so I figured they would correct the symbol. Well, then the next time I refreshed it, it showed winds: 100 MPH, so just a typo that was quickly corrected by them. I went back and quickly corrected my original post.
