Lost power for about an hour. About 2.5" of rain in the official Irene rain bucket. It's gotten a bit breezy, the local news just reported gusts north of me to 44 mph, but I haven't seen anything like that here. The pressure has dropped, causing my water barometer to rise another 1.75". Pic of said barometer so you have some idea of what I'm talking about:

Pretty stunned at Irene's current appearance. Not surprised at all its only 90mph now. Hopefully the surge won't be as bad either but like many have said the damage has been done. A hit on the outer banks is still considered a landfall correct?

Also lastest VDM is actually NNW of first pass on AF Recon plane thats in the storm. So storm is moving more north now, or for the short term.

Could be just nocturnal cooling playing its part with Irene's decrease in status and the increase in latitude. The SST 'warm tongue' still supports Irene until the system is out of the Carolina's by which time dinural heating will be key in the longevity of her maintaining CAT1 status.
Obviously she's going to have to lose that energy sometime still. But like with Katrina just because internal forces may be deleting, doesn't mean the exerted external energy has lost that power with it.

True ! I think there SW mid level jet/shear affecting the westside of COC. Too bad recon cant climb and sample air from 10k to 25kft on the west and sw side of COC. Be some interesting dropsondes from 25kft to surface i think.
