Winds at their house look to have been in the 40-50 mph sustained range, possibly brief periods of 50-65 mph sustained. Gusts to near 70-85 mph. Worst should be past them now. Hurricane force winds are confined to the eastern eyewall.

Bastardi tweeted about an unofficial report of 90 mph sustained on Hatteras. Has anyone else heard about this?

I'm sure your sister is scared. Here is this morning's Emergency Announcement from Dare County officials. Perhaps she might consider sitting this out with a neighbor with some hurricane experience if that will help calm her down. No reason she needs to be alone when others are there too. I wish her well and thank you for trying to help from such a distance. We've all had to do that in life!

I haven't heard of that on Hatteras but apparently Cedar Island (eastern eyewall) has 90mph sustained. CNN is reporting a 115mph gust from there earlier this morning.

Irene is there now, no time to report or wonder how bad it's going to be. They need to find a safe location in the highest place they can find. This is why it's critical to prepare before the hurricane season. People are to busy protecting themselves to provide accurate weather reports when the storm is on top of them. The best that can be done is to look at the radar, determine their location, and tell them when the worst of the storm is passing. Hoping for the best!

Is she stalling? Or are you referring to little movement in pressure.

She seems like such a lumbering hurricane, especially since DR.

I know this is long-range speculation, but what are the chances this could turn into a massive extratropical storm over the north Atlantic and threaten parts of Europe adding more misery to the situation?
