That thing had a Pinhole eye that went almost undetected from the JTWC.

MFR went with 90 kt 10-min (~100 kt 1-min) for peak, which I agree with. While Batsirai had a short first peak, it takes an extreme amount of subsidence to clear out such a tiny pinhole eye so quickly and efficiently, and for such extreme subsidence you need a high intensity. Add to that the instantaneous 6.5s for a few frames (granted this was slightly tropopause-inflated but meh) as well as the powerful core on microwave imagery, and we have a very solid case for a major.

Wow, this thing fell off hard. The inner core has completely dissolved, convection is ragged, and parts of the circulation seem to be exposed. Batsirai might have gone from 35 kt to ~100 kt and back down to 35-50 kt within 18-24 hours. Ive never seen such wildly fluctuating intensity.

Ambali in 2019 did the same thing, except it was from CAT 1 to CAT 5 in 12 hours & from CAT 5 to CAT 1 in 30 hours.

JTWC Forecast has a secondary Peak for this system as a CAT 3+ (Don't know how strong it will get) heading towards Madagascar.

This thing is going to be an major disaster for Madagascar if these model trends continue. HWRF has in around the 940mb range on approach and JTWC keeps increasing the peak on each new forecast. Definitely could be looking at a major maybe a Cat 4+ coming in.

Looks like an eye might be starting to clear out on IR. All models show significant intensification into a major within the next 24-36 hours, and the latest HWRF has this peak as a 938mb Cat 4 before slightly weakening ahead of landfall in Madagascar.

So when Batsirai had a pinhole eye it was classified as a 45 kt TS, yet when it’s sheared and has a partially exposed LLC, they call it a 100 kt major. I don’t even know how any satellite estimate is getting up that high.

This is not a major.

I know it’s not respectful to bash professional agencies and the JTWC gets enough flak already, but yikes what are they even doing with this system? It’s clearly a non-major TC struggling with shear.
