Next pass through the center by the recon will be very interesting, Sandy looks better for each sat picture the last couple of hours.

Frank, not true. It was announced yesterday that the casinos are closing. I don't know what time, however. The NJ officials have done better than many in terms of getting evacuations started and decisions made quickly. They made very clear specific announcements yesterday morning, I believe, unlike a certain mayor.

Its the ridge over Eastern Canada and south of Greenland that will turn it west.

KBBOCA wrote:So irresponsible of the NFL to continue home games in NJ and Philly when there is a state of emergency and people trying to evacuate out of lower Manhattan especially. You don't need a big game day traffic jam at the Meadowlands adding to the chaos!!!!

I'm so angry about this.

I know next to nothing about the traffic in that area. Is the Meadowlands in an area where folks leaving Zone A out of NYC would be going through? I'd like to think the NFL is in contact with local officials about this ... then again, we've already seen plenty of head-scratching decisions out of officials along the East Coast.

Just saw a tweet from @TheNewsHQ saying more than 3,200 flights at NY and NJ airports cancelled already.

I fear the evacuations came too little, too late. I think a good chunk of the people, after what he said yesterday, are going to ignore them.

Once Sandy makes landfall, will the strongest winds be to the SW or NE?

And I believe the Port of NY closes at 6pm tonight.

Yes, the meadowlands is on the major highway Rte. 3 leading in and out of the Lincoln Tunnel. It is a bad traffic area even at normal times...

While on the topic of NJ, here's a comment I just posted in the storm prep thread, but thought it deserved posting here too:

http://www.nj.com is a go-to resource for info about preps and evacuations, etc. in NJ. I'm very impressed.

Firstly: Parkway tolls are suspended Northbound, and so are the A/C Expressway tolls, so people can evacuate from the threatened shore areas:
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/1 ... er_default

Secondly: NJ.Com has a very large "live chat / Q&A" section on its home page where people can ask questions about the storm, tell where water, or batteries, or gas can be found, etc. Excellent.

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/1 ... rt_m-rpt-2

You throw in Chris Christie's no-nonsense leadership yesterday, and I'm feeling pretty proud of my home state right about now.

And of course, ya gotta love some of the crazy humor NJ residents can manage even at the worst of times. Saw this comment in that live Q&A page at NJ.com:

"I have finally found a silver lining to this mess ....once your home is trashed or worst totally destroyed ,your property taxes will finally come down ...I'll be at town hall next week looking for a lower assessment at once .Sandy will do what no other politician has ever been abel to accomplish !"

LOL LOL LOL LOL. When I remember what our NJ property taxes were, there is MUCH truth in that comment!!!

By now everyone in the Mid-Atlantic and New England should have their preps done or close to being done. I, personally have family in Philly and New England so I am concerned, but some people are still not convinced living up there that this is going to be a very bad situation. I just called my son who lives in Philly and he just seemed unconcerned. He was saying, "Mom, it's just a Category 1..just how bad can that be?" He had no preps done, and I was like well just be prepared to be in the dark, maybe no water, but hopefully you have enough food because everything will be closed for a few days. UGH!

People don't have to go far to get out of Zone A in NYC. City generally sits on the Fall Line between Piedmont and Coastal Plain and land rises fairly steeply from the ocean.

Is there a chance this thing will ramp up as fast as it did between Jamaica and Cuba? Just seems like its organizing as fast as it did last week.
