Not going to do much until that easterly calms down... Especially at 5 miles above surface.

You're saying they sampled the whole storm already?!

They did one pass at 10,000 ft before dropping down to 5,000 ft for pass #2. They are starting pass #3 right now...so basically yes.

Don't think so ... Gilbert was in a steady state of strengthening at that point and rolled south of Haiti.

Nope; I watched it happen.

Gilbert's problem wasn't decoupling but rather a very intense feeder band stealing moisture. The system was a top-end TS or low-end cat-1 at that point, but had been puttering for half a day with a three-quarters closed eye. Then it scraped off the feeder convection over Haiti; and the center firmed up nice and round before clocking Jamaica at about 120mph, IIRC.

2nd pass was was lowered to 5kft to do a center fix for NHC... there back doing there research mission. ANY EASTERLY wind at 4 km is not going to allow any storms to circle the center. Basically, will continue to see storms flare and fade... if the surface slows down more, then i expect will see a CDO form... until then, just like the EURO had the last few days... this system to me and gonna keep wobbling along so to speak.

*just in from Kermit* :) #NOAA42 #Isaac: On east-west pass, lightning display here. Winds at flight-level from east, suggesting flight-level center is south of us.

Just checked the 10 day forecast for my home town on The Weather Channel, and they say we need to watching the Tropics for Thursday. Just look up the zipcode 70526 and do the 10 day forecast to see it for yourself.

Says the same for Orange, Texas for Thursday. Covering all bases I guess.

I don't want to bog down the board with this back and forth ... but facts do matter. When Gilbert "scraped" past Haiti, he was a Category 3 hurricane. I watched it also. In fact, I covered Gilbert for the newspaper I worked for at the time as a reporter.

I'm an amateur's amateur ... but it still looks like a large, disorganized mess. I thought it was more impressive last evening than now.

Please stay away from Texas. We don't need another "Isacc's Storm"

Conditions sure have been rough this year for these storms to ramp up......any intensification is like watching paint dry.....Remember 05'...those storms were bombing out overnight....ie Wilma; depression to cat 4 in 36 hours

It didn't scrape by Dominican Republic. It was a good 2 1/2 degrees south of there at the time it strengthened to a cat 3.
