Since its now a CAT2, I actually think I rather have seen this not become a major at all, now there is no weird streak of absence of majors for such a high number of TS's that formed already. That was something that could have kept things on edge for 2012...a dumb season.

Micheal was only briefly a CAT3 so I don't see it has a huge accomplishment for 2012 with how things are going for the ever increasing sad Leslie. Huge accomplishment for Michael, not so much for the overall season.

I can.

Just curious; what better place would you like to have a major hurricane?

Exactly, that's a very good place, it wasn't affecting anyone when and where it became a major hurricane, which is something you rarely see in the Atlantic, fish storms usually occur in the Pacific.

The three strongest storms - Gordon, Kirk and Michael - all did it in the subtropical east Atlantic, which once again is the sweet spot.

Silly question, probably, but what was Michael's origin? Didn't he come from a tropical wave that trucked off to the NW after leaving Africa? Or am I getting my waves mixed up (a likely possibility)?

I think Michael formed off a non tropical low.

Michael is by far my most favorite storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season.

Without a doubt, it has been my favorite as well. This is a prime example of an overachiever - reaching major hurricane status at the end of an impressive RI phase. :jump:

Honestly, Michael was a good storm and continues to produce a healthy eyewall and powerful Category 2 winds. Just look at the eye how it is almost totally cloud-free in the 13:15 UTC image, a true sign that this storm isn't giving up. What a great storm - he will be remembered.

Michael's eye is getting better defined and symmetric again, could reintensify a little more.

Seems to want to steal the spotlight from Leslie and the severe threat!

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't this the small little invest 99L that we thought was going to poof before even developing? Just shows us how life is full of strange possibilities. :)

The NHC said that Michael had an overachieving history! What a great little hurricane! :D
