Gillian is the first category 5 per JTWC in the Australian regions since 2006 Monica, am I right?

Looks that way..

I would have thought George or Hamish would have been the last cyclones.

Per JTWC, they are category 4.

Doing a little search I found that 2010 Ului was the last category 5 in the Australian region.

Bruce wasn’t in the Australian region when it peaked and it didn’t reach Category 5 per SSHS. :wink:

I don't think Gillian was a Category 5. It just didn't have that look like Bruce or Ului did also when it was at peak intensity it really struggled to clear out its eye.

Per JTWC, they are category 4.


JTWC peaked George as a high-end Category 3. (Personally, I think that's a bit low).

On George's wiki page:
At 7 p.m, the weather station on Bedout Island (off the Pilbara Coast) reported a 10 minute mean wind speed of 194 kilometres per hour (121 mph), which is the highest 10 minute average officially recorded in Australia.


121mph is around 105KT. 10-min winds of 105KT translates to around 1-min winds of 120KT.
