In any event, those are some of my initial thoughts on "Medicanes". I should probably read up on a journal paper or two about the subject before spouting off any more.

Just very good thoughts. A subtropical or tropical system doesn't need SSTs of 26 or 27C if the higher atmosphere is cold enough.

What did we saw in this case? It was a very small system with max winds near the center. There was a clear eye in visible images with an eyewall and no frontal system. In other cases like Grace near the azores or Vince we did call them a tropical system, why not this time? For me this had to be added to the 2014 list as a tropical storm with max winds of about 45 kts.

Many Thanks for the explanation.
I think as you..
I think his explanation is good also for These m cyclones, right?
Chris jun 2012 sea surface 21-22°C
Grace October 2009 sea surface 21°C
Vince October 2005 sea surface 23°C
Karl October 1980 sea surface 19-20°C

All these cyclones have occurred over 30-40¤Latitude.
All initially not tropical. In these cases an Extratropical cyclone become in subtropical and subsequently in a tropical cyclone (Tropical transition).
Are only occurred 2-3000 km to west, over sub-atlantic, instead ' at east, over Mediterranean.
Moreover, naturals phenomena not have a geografic limits, and the Mediterranean Sea is only a part of the Subtropical-Atlantic.

These values seem reasonable.

I know Jack Beven at NHC has performed at least a cursory look into medcanes. Let me ask him for his insights.
