I'm from Australia and I think it pronounced like 'Chan (Jackie Chan) Tal (Tally Scores)', just my opinion.

"Shawn tall" is my understanding of how it should be pronounced.

ozonepete wrote:I couldn't get on here all day but was checking the satellite images when I could. Boy, is this a fighter. Just doesn't want to give up. I saw how NHC dropped it to 10% and then bumped it to 20%. Who knows what to do with this one, lol. Anyway I just checked the stats and it looks like it still has a decent shot. A key element is that it looks like the southerly flow on the east side of the trough along the east coast is receding northwestward and weakening somewhat, apparently just enough that this system is getting left behind in very light northerly flow. Then it might just hang around there east of Florida or Georgia for another day or two. That would give it another shot at intensifying since the shear is really low there. A little drift to the northwest would be ideal - there's very little shear there and very, very light steering winds. Just a little bit more eastward and the shear is pretty bad.

Hey ozonepete, does it look as if the disturbed area has already begun to slow down? The last few loops to me show that it is possibly. Maybe it is just me. So, you see a possibility that the steering will collapse and the system will be in a COL for a period of time until the ridge builds back in later in the weekend.

jaguarjace,
You are exactly right, I went to school with a girl by the name of Chantal, and her mother was French, she said her name just like you pronounced it. Everyone has bee saying it wrong. Now for the weather.

I am so ready to write this system off! But I know when it comes to the tropics there can always be some random suprises here and there.

And better stay alert for the area south of the central part of the Cuban Island. Probably along old wave axis. Should tend to drift wnw toward NW Carribean.

That's a good observation. It really does look like it is settling into a COL, or very low wind area between 2 lows and 2 highs. It's just still hard to believe that this might survive what looks like such a hostile environment all around it, but the forecasted conditions still look like if it doesn't get sucked northward overnight it could get left in a pretty dead steering environment with low shear. I remember telling Jeremy the other day that this could happen, but thought that solution was a real outlier. I'm definitely still watching this closely.

Yeah ozonepete, that is what I am thinking as well. Chantal may get stuck in a COL as a pointed out and may allow it to develop in a more conducive environment.

I tell you, this Chantal refuses to die folks LOL.. I mean this has been such a tenacious system fighting every obstacle you can imagine. We have seen Bones declare her dead and all, but yet she still is here fighting.

Okay, northJax. But even when a lot of people here said it was dead I remember wxman57 said he didn't want to say it was dead because he thought it still had a shot at regeneration. And the other thing is given all we can see, I'd give it less than 50/50 for survival. The environment is just so damn hostile all around it and it has to stall out in a small "safe zone" to survive. But even so I have to say that if I wake up tomorrow and this has started to intensify again, I wouldn't be very surprised. See you tomorrow. :)

1. THE REMNANTS OF CHANTAL ARE CENTERED ABOUT 250 MILES TO THE
NORTH-NORTHEAST OF GREAT ABACO IN THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS AND ARE
MOVING NORTHWARD. THIS DISTURBANCE CONTINUES TO PRODUCE
DISORGANIZED SHOWER ACTIVITY AND GUSTY WINDS...MAINLY TO THE
NORTHEAST OF THE BAHAMAS. SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS
UNLIKELY...AND IT HAS A LOW CHANCE...20 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A
TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

Nice flare up this morning but if it has any type of LLC it's small. southerly winds off the coast of north Fla. This ole gal doesn't know she's supposed to be dead. First visibles, should tell the story.

Down to 10%.

CLOUDINESS AND SHOWERS EXTENDING FROM THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS
NORTHWARD ACROSS THE ATLANTIC ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMNANTS OF
CHANTAL. THIS ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED TO MOVE NORTHWARD AND MERGE WITH
A FRONTAL SYSTEM ALONG THE EASTERN UNITED STATES DURING THE NEXT
DAY OR TWO. THIS SYSTEM HAS A LOW CHANCE...NEAR 10 PERCENT...OF
BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
