I just saw this post after posting in the discussion thread. I dont know whats correct. The coordinates they are transmitting are not plotting on GE...sometimes there is pressure readings sometimes not...frustrating for them as well on the plane I'm sure

Does anyone know what the avg age of these aircraft they use are? Just wondering.

I'm not sure but I worked on them in Biloxi in 1983 and they sure weren't new then. probably built in late sixties if I had to guess.

I believe AF301 is the oldest plane, correct, and AF309 (or 310) the newest?

I believe the P-3's date back to the 1970s, while the AF planes are varying ages.

Yes 301 & 302 are the oldest and ditto on the newest at 309 & 310. The actual age of the C-130J's I'd have to look up but they've been around since the 70's or 80's I believe.

I'm still working with my regular job, but will try to clear it by noon if possible so I can help.

The C-130J Model took over in 1999. The original platform is from the '60s I believe...but I do not know if they have C-130s that have simply been sent to reset and upgraded, or if the older planes were actually retired and they received new aircraft that were J models. Most likely both - some are probably upgrades, and others were bought new.

Also, the communications issues they have, have NOTHING to do with the age of the aircraft itself. The communications are routed from a computer system through a transmitter to a satellite, where it is then routed to a station on the ground (either the NHC or Keesler AFB). I, personally, have dealt with military communications equipment and some of the equipment seems to have a mind of it's own! One minute it works and you get messages sent in a couple seconds, then the next message takes 10 minutes for it to go through. It can be a pain in the rear from time to time! Sometimes you just want to take the computer out, throw it across the desert, and then smash what's left with a hammer! :lol:

Our friend Dave nor me can't do the missions of this afternoon/evening so I ask for volunteers to post the data from NOAA and Air force planes. Who says yes? :) NOAA departs at 1 PM CDT and Air Force at 4 PM CDT.
