Hopefully they do another reanalysis this time comparing all three typhoons, Gay, Angela, and Haiyan and possibly include other typhoons.

They are ADT’s final T-number, but not CI-number. ADT has been revised many times, so storms are not really comparable by ADT.

Those unofficial experts just made unofficial re-analysis, and I doubt that JTWC will begin any re-analysis.

Besides, JMA has begun to re-analyse storms since 1981, and the part of storms during 1987 to 1996 will be released in the end of this year. If JMA changes the Koba table due to this re-analysis, Haiyan’s value may be revised.

Going back to this thread and reading about this 170 knots Super Typhoon gives me goosebumps still to this day.

Impressive storm surge that Haiyan caused in the island of Samar that moved a large boulder.Dr Jeff Masters discuss about this.

On November 8, 2013, the world changed forever for the people of the Central Philippines. The strongest tropical cyclone at landfall on record in world history, Super Typhoon Haiyan, crashed ashore on the island of Samar, bringing a massive storm surge of 15 - 23 feet to the city of Tacloban. At least 6,300 people died, mostly due to the storm surge, making it the deadliest typhoon in modern Philippines history. Storm surge surveys published earlier this year revealed that high waves on top of the surge created high water marks of up to 46 feet above mean sea level—among the highest in world history. New research presented by Max Engel and co-authors from the University of Cologne in Germany at this week’s American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, California found that Haiyan’s surge set another all-time record: the heaviest boulder known to be moved by a tropical cyclone. The team’s post-storm survey found a number of multi-ton boulders transported by the storm, with the heaviest being an incredible 180 metric tons. The huge boulder was shifted by 45 meters, parallel to the shore, by Haiyan’s storm surge. The boulder was on the shore near the town of Hernani, Samar Island, near where the remarkable storm surge video linked below was taken. Haiyan’s extreme storm surge was amplified by a long-wave phenomenon called infragravity waves or surf beat, Dr. Engel explained to me in an email, and that he and other researchers are not convinced anymore that a storm surge in the traditional sense, due to strong winds piling up a big dome of water, was that important in Eastern Samar.

World record indeed

But how did they know that boulder moved from one spot to another? Is there some kind of tracking device that they inserted into these rocks before haiyan? How did they guess the weight of that rock? Did they find markings on the ground that would indicate it moved? What if that rock never moved?

Alot of questions with this world record...

Yolanda death toll as high as 15,000, priest says

The priest told me they believe about 15,000 died due to Yolanda, however, many had been buried as soon as the first two days after Yolanda’s onslaught (and they may not have been included in the official count

And the fact that the president said there would be less than 2,500 dead... In fact I think the count would be higher than what the priest said..

Haiyan maintained a 8.0 dvorak for 18 hours...incredible...

Great information from JTWC on the world's strongest tropical cyclone...

Hi everyone, I arrived from Ormoc City yesterday. I was told by some relatives and family friends about the impact this storm had made during Haiyan. This is a late post, and I forgot to post this yesterday. Typhoon Haiyan will remain forever in their memories, and is the worst they had been through. I saw some trees and buildings (but not as evident as before) still damaged or debarked because of the powerful winds which lashed the city on November 8. They told me that one of their helpers had to hold on to a doorknob because of the raging winds. They had to repair the roofs and other structural damages after Haiyan. Good thing they have already recovered!

Apparently both the quantity and symmetry of lightning in the eyewall of Haiyan was rather notable, a study shows.

Hoarau used the 910 mb from Guiuan to estimate a pressure near 860 mb for Haiyan.

Here is another research paper citing the 910 hPa record from Guinan and also saying observation (while I'm not sure it was gust or sustained) of a 194 knot winds
This was just put in the summary end
Observation data were collected during typhoon Yolanda and Doppler
radar measured more than 100m/s (360kph) near Guiuan.

But skimming at the paper I can't see a table of the 100m/s record

The >100 m/s winds detected by radar were a few kilometers aloft at a level more comparable to flight level winds.

Makes sense that this was near flight level, and I found the table showing it (page 15) but it's actually a radar graphic as I was expecting it to be a table, well anyway based on that 175-180 kt seems to be the estimate when it was nearing landfall. Thanks for the clarification.

I believe the professional storm chasers that covered Haiyan were not able to penetrate the eye, and I remember hearing that they deliberately missed the eye of the super typhoon because they had already anticipated the grim outcome.

However this video was uploaded only in 2020, and it showed the actual passage of Haiyan's eye in Leyte. You can see the sudden lull of wind and even brighter skies for a short period of time, then the backside of the eyewall came even stronger.

I am amazed that this could be the only footage of Haiyan's eye passage on the fateful day of November 8, 2013.

Coming back here after ten years.

Ten years ago, at this very hour (7:23 AM Philippine Time) Haiyan is crossing the Leyte coast.

In Memoriam to the thousands (accounted and unaccounted for) who perished.
