I thought the same thing....usually the board goes nuts during landfalling tropical cyclones in the USA. I keep hitting refresh but no new posts. I guess Bill isn't strong enough to be of much concern or interest, although this is still going to be a major flooding event for some folks.

Hmm. The Astros won yesterday. Does that count?

Welcome back, WxMan! Did you get to see the waterspout over Lake Michigan yesterday? Probably not, the way yesterday went...

Landfall has always killed the board lol. Everyone is exhausted predicting where when and strength.

Will this go down as two official landfalls then?

As for a peak intensity, I think 50 kt is probably reasonable.

It's true. the build up always exceeds the event. I've thought about this over the years. My guess is interest declines as people are yanked from the contest (that is their area isn't going to get hit) and that those that are being hit are less inclined to post...perhaps due to power/internet interruptions or they're just looking out their windows in amazement...or in the case of stronger storms they're trying to protect their property/lives.

Agreed. Only in cases of an exceptional storm/disaster like Katrina do storm threads keep going after landfall. Then new threads need to be started for post-storm issues since the storm itself isn't the major issue at that point.

Back to Bill, I'm wondering if the massive rain event is going to hit Houston tonight or stay west. Time will tell I guess.

Now it will come down to where the training of storms begins. Still pulling in some very strong storms

My view as an enthusiast is that people post a lot because they are excited about what a tropical cyclone might do, and are interested in seeing how strong it might get, where it may go, etc. Once landfall occurs, the questions have been decided, the uncertainty is gone, and the feeling of mystery and wonder declines, as the storm's fate is sealed.

Of course Bill isn't the best example of this, given the possibility of inland re-intensification. But I can definitely identify with the feeling of looking for the next one almost as soon as a tropical cyclone landfalls for the last time.

Yep. That's the biggest concern tonight. Time will tell but some locations west of Houston will likely see some heavy rain totals by tomorrow's end. The rain has picked up here in Sugar Land over the last few hours. Nothing heavy but moderate rains.

So, the folks at the (Anything But) Weather Channel have been discussing something called the "Brown Ocean" phenomenon causing TS Bill to actually strengthen after landfall. Does anyone care to fill us in on this?

Just went out to check the drainage we've been working on for months. Everything seems to be working okay. Moderate but persistent rain here near downtown Houston. Needed an umbrella if you didn't want to get wet.

Never heard of the "brown ocean" concept so looked it up. Found an article on it. Quote:

But the research has found some storms can actually strengthen over land by drawing from the evaporation of abundant soil moisture, a phenomenon known as the "brown ocean" effect, according to Marshall Shepherd, director of atmospheric sciences at the University of Georgia.

Sounds like if the ground is really saturated it acts like water and feeds the storm. That level of soil saturation is definitely an issue here in Texas.
