Possible second landfall of what's left of the center of Matthew??? Looks like it on radar, and wind has completely abated here on Oak island. Looks like the western side is headed this way.

Y'all stay safe up there. Inland flooding is the deadliest aspect of hurricanes and is often the most ignored.

We're starting to get some TS conditions here but we've had nowhere near as much rain as there has been in the center of the state. It unfortunately is going to be very bad along the rivers as all of that water heads downstream over the next few days.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
From the latest latest forecast discussion out of NWS Morehead City / Newport:
Higher res meso models
indicate an area of intense mesoscale banding developing somewhere
across E NC as intense fgen signature develops due to tropical
system becoming more baroclinic in nature. We can actually see
this type of banding along and near Wilmington at this hour. Still
forecasting 5 to 10 inches of rain across a large area of E NC
with locally higher amounts possible depending on where exactly
heavy mesoscale rain bands develop. The exact track of Matthew
will ultimately determine where the additional rain/banding will
occur. The timing for the very heavy rain rates looks to continue
just inland and migrate to the NE as the system parallels the
coast. Travel will be extremely dangerous and potentially life
threatening tonight as combination of darkness and flash flooding
lead to unseen high water across area roadways.

High wind warning for Hampton Roads declared by NWS. 60 mph winds incoming. We will lose some trees and power tonight, that's a certainty. Continuous tropical downpours now with sporadic thunder and lightning. Wind not too bad yet, but will be in a few hours. It's amazing how quickly things have deteriorated. I think people in this area are gonna get a bit more than they bargained for tonight.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Hi guys, needed to take a two day break from this, as I have been obsessing for nearly two weeks (as most of you all have )
I wanted to check in and see if either Matthew or Nicole are posing any threat to east PA around this time?
I see various models and now we are getting some rain and stuffs, just just curious if there have been any other wild changes and what not.
Thanks and hope everyone impacted or about to be is safe!

Thanks VDOG. I'm on base, we were just talking about the winds and such. This particular area is looking at closer to 10 inches of rain if that rain band track hold true. Going to go grab some pictures in about an hour. Downtown, closer to Buffalo Wild Wings and ODU is seeing road closure and detours, so if you're travelling out that way be safe.

The transition from CAT 1 to Trop messed with the wind and the rain a bit. The rain and wind moved north from the Western side of the eye and is giving N. Carolina and SE Va a hard time right now. Maybe you get some residual rain up by you, but it doesn't look like you're in any sort of danger at all. The Cold Front is doing it's job and pushing Matthew out to sea. Hope I explained this right. Again, I'm not Met, I'm just posting my opinions based off my observations.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
No way in the world that Matthew is still a hurricane. I know that the NHC doesn't want to downgrade it while it's still near the coast. Surface winds all along the coast near the center are in the 40-45 mph range. Haven't seen any higher. Starting to look extratropical, too. Big rain maker, but the rain should be ending in the next several hours.

The Hurricane is making a transition to an extra tropical system, sort of a hybrid nor'easter. As it does the wind field has expanded greatly and the interaction with the cold front has provided lift and enhanced the rain. The storm is already on an ENE heading so it should not effect you outside of some rain associated with the cold front. Not a professional met, but I listen to one on tv.

Haha, thanks guys. We could use a little rain, so no biggie.
Hoping Nicole stays far away too, I'm guessing that same front should push it out as well?

The deluge has finally arrived in my area. Pressure 1000 mb. Just saw a report on the news that flooding on the NE Cape Fear River at Chinquapin could meet that during Hurricane Floyd. That would be the area SE of Fayetteville. Storm total now 4 inches in Greenville.

The water level at the downtown Wilmington tide gage has broken the previous record set by Hazel (8.15 ft) & is currently 8.21 ft. #Matthew

Agreed. I live in central Pennsylvania so i've seen many storms come up the coast as well.

Yup. We always get these storms in November/ October. Only difference is they usually start in the Gulf. They usually ride up the coast and turn extratropical once they reach our latitude. Some of our worst storms have been Nor'easters with winds sometimes reaching hurricane force. I never bought that loop south after S. Carolina. It was nonsensical and went completely contrary to any storm I've seen come through this area in the 20 years I've lived here.
