I disagree. Florida will be well in the cone at 5PM and the west shift could continue. Actually surprised at met would say that..

One has to keep in mind too that it's been 11 years since a significant hurricane impact on FL (I think none since Wilma in '05, am I right?) So you have a lot of new residents. I know it's a fine line. You over hype a storm, nothing happens, and people become complacent. But, given so long a hurricane drought, I think a strong wake up call is probably a good move right now.

Agreed!

Storm appears to be on track with that wobble. A little nudge to the right before Haiti has been evident on the NHC guidance and models. Unfortunately a bad situation unfolding for Haiti.

Remember that disaster declarations are needed under state and federal laws to open up resources to prepare for a storm. They aren't made to say "this is going to be bad".

I think one other thing people dismissing the Florida threat need to consider is that *if* this makes landfall in Florida, it has a good chance of being the first category 4 landfall in the US since Charley, and a greater than zero chance of being possibly stronger. This is not something to brush off when models get this close to the peninsula.

Prayers for folks in Haiti, it still looks bad there from the earthquake outside the cities. I hope we'll get a wobble and at least keep the eyewall off the Tiburon Penn.

Prayers for those in the path of this monster storm...Haiti, Jamaica, DR, Cuba, Bahamas....
As for Florida's east coast, it has been spared many times in the past 11 years. Praying that the good fortune continues....
Further north, let's hope the storm decides to move out to sea.......

This is not going to be good for Haiti. A storm this strong would cause devastation in the US, let alone a country like Haiti.

The outer-most banding on the NE quadrant is a flat line in conformity with what is obviously a strong ridge above it. The system is now probably being guided by the more local Caribbean trough, but this flat line shaping to the NE could be a sign that a NW-turning ridge awaits.

Left, right, left, right. Geeze Louise. Although it does seem that the GFS has had it out for eastern NC since the get go. Now pretty much right on top. Was hoping for out to sea, but every time I look it's back to the OBX. Also looks like a traditional coast hugger meaning it will drive everyone on the east coast crazy. Even if it goes out to sea it looks like hype damage will occur. National networks will have the rest of the week to destroy business up the entire east coast. Here's to hoping out to sea is the answer, but I'm more pessimistic at the moment.

I know. That whole "blob" of what used to be Matt's appendage is going over the whole island.

It truly couldn't be too more horrific for those people...

Meet Alexis, who lives in Altamira neighborhood, outskirts of #Santiago. He removed tin roof so #Matthew doesn't blow it away. @WPLGLocal10

Can someone provide a source for the information that the Florida governor declared a State of Emergency? I am showing no executive orders from him, internal Emergency Management notifications, or even local media coverage or stories...just some tweets from up to 24 hours ago, which some are clearly bogus.

Went through Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and Jeanne in 2004 here in northern Palm Beach County. Was out of town for Frances. I don't know if Matthew is going to make landfall, miss by a lot, or miss by a little. But there are a lot of new residents who didn't deal with all the hassles, clean up, and mess from those storms. So if the modelling continues to shift more westerly, I hope they pay attention and prepare!

Tens of thousands will probably die in Haiti in the next 72 hours. This will be a disaster of epic preportion's. Most of the buildings there are on hills and they are of poorly construction, there is nowhere to evacuate. Cities will be wiped off the map, there will likely be a major refugee crisis after the storm.

Ah right. I was traveling then, and pretty much offline, so I hardly even realized that storm happened! But yeah, duh! Sorry for the stupidity on my part!
