Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
GFS is showing a quicker turn which will bring it towards the Florida coast, but also weaken it due to land interaction with Cuba. The question is, if that verifies, how much can it regain before it gets near the coast. That may be the million dollar question.

Through 78 the storm looks stronger and closer to the coast of Florida.

There really is no need to run out and fill your gas tank; we learned our lesson after Hurricane Andrew, many stations are required to have backup power.
Here is a list of (just Miami area) gas stations with backup power: http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/assets/gas-stations-with-generators.pdf

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
forget about intensity noise on these runs...its going to be an a very dangerous hurricane regardless of what little weakening you might see in any of these models..nhc keeps it major up to 30N and they tend to be conservative..nhc, alonyo, bastardi, etc all keep it intense through the bahamas chain...everything is in place for a major hurricane..dont be fooled by models showing anything different albeit they are all showing a very well developed TCsponger wrote:GFS is showing a quicker turn which will bring it towards the Florida coast, but also weaken it due to land interaction with Cuba. Hopefully the eye will only clip Haiti, but the topography can eat into the storm a little bit. If its moving slowly like this, its possible it will die down some. Anything will help. If the mountains can destabalize the storm a bit, that would be great

Well, just to make things interesting: The Dept. of Agriculture has put a quarantine on the Florida Keys for anyone trying to arrive or leave with their pets. A full on checkpoint at MM 106 due to the Screwworms that have been found in the lower Keys. Hope there's no evacuations coming for us lol.

GFS 120 right next to Charleston area. I got some family I've been warning to be on watch down there.

It usually costs about $8 to travel the 379km to travel from Tiburon to Port-au-Prince.
Anyone heard if they are running extra buses?
Might be a good time to make that trip to Port-au-Prince and take in some of the Davinci inspired artworks.

The mountains of Cuba and Hispanolia can cause the storm expand further out, but if the eye misses the mountainous areas of the land it can keep it's strength and possibly ramp up with the wind field actually expanding.

Back up power is great...when there's no gas left in the gas station's tanks because the trucks couldn't make it there to fill them up...

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
I suspect hurricane watches (assuming current trends remain intact) will be issued for the east coast. if it does scrape the coast we could very well ultimately see the combo of cane watches and ts warnings. there's typically such a tight gradient, especially on the western side. the windfield characteristics after the Cuba interaction will really be key. Matthew is a massive and deep atmospheric pit and those fill slowly. My goodness at the potential here...especially for the Bahamas and Carolinas. but any more west shifts....let's just say Florida's margin of safety has been wiped out..
