This could be the greatest disaster in terms of sheer damage potential in modern history. If it comes in how I think it will no building but a bunker would be undamaged on the whole entire east side of the peninsula.

Yeah I agree. I thought Scorpion" s post wast fine. This is a discussion forum and what he said is very within reason. I am expecting Matthew to strengthen to near or at Cat. 5 strength in the next 24 hours.
We are are all on edge, including yours truly down here. We will all be just fine as we watch Matthew' approach to Florida.
Tying to make a decision to either ride it out here at home or move farther inland. Considering the evacuations pending, it probably will be smart to ride this out. It will be rough that is for sure, but I am about 25 miles inland from the coast. Based on the projected track, the inner core is hoing to get close enough, if not make landfall her on Friday and definitely will givebus winnds of hurricane strength. Tough call to ridebit out or keave folks!!.
Yep same boat here in St Augustine. Evacuation is horrible so we will risk that eye making ashore AND a stronger hurricane. If both of those come to pass, rough day indeed. But if it stays offshore, 50-60 mph can be quite enjoyable for a weather nut.
Agreed, wouldn't evacuate unless I lived in a mobile home. The expense, the traffic, worrying about running out of gas, bringing supplies. Plus it is so hard to drive on debris strewn roadway.

Seriously, can we stop it with the "greatest disaster in history" and "Katrina for Florida" talk? For all we know, it's possible Matthew doesn't intensify at all and relatively speaking spares the Bahamas and Florida. I don't think that'll be the case, but it's entirely possible, There's so much that has to happen between now and Friday that we simply don't know. That's my rant for the day. Blog responsibly.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
I need preparation advice:
I live in an apartment 8 miles from Jax beach. No shutters, no wind-proof glass. My primary concern is for a big sliding glass door leading to a balcony, behind which is a forest of trees. Should I get plywood to put up outside the glass doors on the balcony, or should it not get that bad?

I felt the same way as you but I was chastised for saying so. I know it's a discussion forum and people can have their opinions but I have family in Florida and these comments almost made me sick to my stomach.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
It's good Matthew weakened overnight and this morning (mountains doing their thing) but I'm still thinking on what Max Mayfield said when he was the NHC director. He said, worst case scenario was a hurricane strengthening up to landfall or near the coast. And that's true sometimes. Andrew and Charley did the same thing. I hope Matthew doesn't but he does have plenty of room and time to re-intensify.

Well, I just saw 85kt SFMRs on the ultra weak (east) oops, west side that has just taking a beating from Cuba. In a high energy low shear environment it should be no problem for it to ramp up well. And TS force winds 90 miles NW of the center.

If that sliding glass door gets hit by something like a branch and the wind and rain penetrate your dwelling it's going to be a major cleanup. I would definitely get whatever you can to shield that door.

Plus there already was a Katrina for Florida, it was called Katrina, which hit SFL first.

Next 24 hours look crucial for Florida. How much restrengthening can Matthew accomplish?
Regardless, 115 mph hurricane is certainly nothing to sneeze out.

Look like Mathew is strengthening. Convection popping, CDO building, Outflow improving in all quads, eye reforming. Plenty of warm water and low shear as well. With the track uncertainty and angle of approach in flux, no one will be chastising you for over-preparing there in Florida.
