Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Looking at recon, Matthew's definitely not a major hurricane anymore IMO. 100mph-105mph at most.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Good let him stay weaker, they don't need a category four barreling down on them. I hope he weakens severely.

I don't see any recent recon data in the recon thread is there a flight going on now?

I would say unlikely given surface obs out of the Bahamas but we will see. NHC is the ultimate arbiter.

There are 2 flights in there right now... NOAA which has been in for a while, and an AF mission that just got to the storm.

Live in Tampa-will the expanding wind field cause any impact in my area? Is the landfall pretty much in stone?

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Hi, long time lurker here. I was wondering if anyone had an idea how severe the winds will get in Jacksonville. I am listening to the news, and they just said they are estimating 40-60 mph winds for our city. higher on the beaches. Is that an accurate estimate? I am in a rental house about 15 miles inland from the beach that has no shutters for the windows. I have fully prepared other than the shutters. Trying to decide if It will be safe to stay here. Thanks for any advice.

No, do not assume that. Prepare if you are in the storm's path.

High percentage based on modeling. We on the west coast will see possible tropical storm force winds near the water, occasional squalls, and possible tornadoes. It's Polk/Highlands Counties on east that get whacked. Just try to help any family members evacuating from the east coast if you have any.

Not at all. This was just a category 5 hurricane. The mountains of Haiti and Cuba disrupted the structure of the system, it has plenty of time to get reorganized.

TheStormExpert wrote:Fortunately according to recon Matthew doesn't seem to be intensifying or deepening at the moment, but there is a chance it could attain some extra strength as it approaches SE or East-Central FL. WPBF 25 News in West Palm Beach is going a little overboard IMO with saying this could be Florida's worst storm in history or the worst since Andrew.
I don't think that's going overboard at all. If this eyewall rides the length of Florida's coastline. The damage will be horrific

Definitely not, Matthew has already devastated several regions and is poised to strike Florida and possibly go up the coast to the Carolinas. Even if he ends up being weaker there will still be tremendous damage done.

Looks like this has been dealing with a bit of shear today, but it's been reestablishing outflow bit by bit today. It may still weaken a bit before restrengthening if it does.
