Looks like those winds hitting those mountains caused a loss of velocity pulling Maria westward toward it.

Prayers for all of the people of the Islands. I apologize if this is OT. My company has a couple of thousand contractors working in PR. We are considering sending out a mass text to people with either some tips and/or to keep the text on their phone and if they get into trouble to attempt to notify us. I was considering telling them what Brian Norcross told people in Miami during Andrew, if it gets bad grab your mattress and get into the tub. If we were to receive some text from people that need assistance, anyone have any ideas on who in Miami we could notify as kind of a relay. I'm going to start by calling the Coast Guard. I've been to PR so many times and met so many beautiful people that would give you the shirt off of their back and I feel like I need to do something. Any input would be appreciated. Good luck to everyone in the path of this storm.

I just tried the link and it's telling me the stream is not working now.

Keep trying. I finally got it to work.

How can these stations be playing music? I don't get it.

basement is a great option if they are not in a flood zone near the beach. This is a mountainous terrain. A basement on the side of a mountain is better than anything above ground- this is like a giant tornado-

most of the deaths will occur due to flash flooding and mudslides in the mountains

Fellow Dominicans,
Our hearts weep bitterly for you and your beautiful, scenic, irreplaceable island. May the Lord be with you on this truly awful night. Godspeed everybody.

Barbuda was not evacuated before Irma, only before Jose. There were no mandatory evacuations for Dominica.

It's not playing music, they are taking calls. And it is not enjoyable listening.

Per Q95.1 FM in Roseau, hospital hit very hard. Not evacuated before landfall.

How are the building codes there? Are they built like fortresses e.g. the Cayman islands?

So sad listening to that radio station. They are playing music and taking calls as well from live callers. A lady called from Atkinson (sp?) - while on the phone with the dj she said her roof was tearing off. So sad.

My prayers are with the people of Dominica. Listening to the radio that was linked and its terrible with people calling in asking for help. I worry because this storm seems to have intensified so quickly.

There aren't many good options then. If your poorly built house is blowing apart around you. The speed by which this storm is moving may mean the winds are a bigger threat than flooding. 160 mph hurricane moving quickly is a huge and devastating wind event.

No. Traditional French and English Caribbean building style. A Cat 3, probably okay. A Cat 5? No way.

Exactly. Also, typically basements are actually built above ground in these mountainous climates aka ground floor is at the highest elevation of the land you own and basement (under ground floor is above ground but still considered a 'basement').

Heard another roof just lifted off next door. We are still in constant contact. They are in Roseau.

Recon is going to arrive right as the eye is making landfall. I wonder how close they'll be able to get on this pass. It's a rare situation where we'll have reconnaissance data of a Cat5 storm literally as the eyewall is making landfall. Truly a terrible night for so many people...

My prayers go out to all in her path, as well as their family and friends that are removed from the areas.
