Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
Maria I believe may reach sub 900 mb as frightening as it is to even decipher right now. Just incredible!! The Atlantic basin has just gone completely insane, like throwing a match and igniting dynamite with all of these deadly monster tropical cyclones just in the last 4 weeks. I am so ready for this nightmarish season to end. Unfortunately, we still have just over two full months of season still to go. Wow!

NEVER, EVER SAY NEVER in the tropics and weather in general, and most importantly, with life itself!!

How about expletives...
I've said my share of expletives today for sure.

This really reminds me of Meranti last year in terms of structure and intensity.
I honestly think that dropsonde is legit and 170 kt is the intensity...

It's going to be making landfall in PR at approximately 2 AM in the morning making things even worse once the power likely goes out.

Prayers for his safety. Just spoke to my dad also, he ended up going to one of his brothers house. He only lives a about 3 miles from my dad, but he is up on a hill. Won't have to worry about storm surge. Praying for everyone on the island.

St. Croix potentially only a few hours away from the northeast eyewall. That EWRC could not come fast enough, anything to weaken this monster.

And in a few weeks the GoM season starts. Ugh.

Who would've known it would be Maria to possibly break Allen's record instead of Irma..

I couldn't have dreamt a worse case scenario for PR. Everything will change after tomorrow.

I'm finding it hard to believe that this is at the same strength wind speed-wise as HAIYAN right now. Or maybe I just don't want to believe it.

Also, winds have been steadily increasing.. We may have our first 200mph Atlantic hurricane soon enough if this keeps up.

This season will 100% be very heavily referenced like 2005. At this point, it may surpass it in terms of craziness.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
I know I was as shocked as anyone at the dropsonde, but it IS just one reading of instantaneous winds. The SFMR and flight level winds are not really supportive of 170 knots yet. It may get there (recon has one more pass before a gap until next plane arrives) but I'm not convinced this is quite at Allen/Haiyan levels yet.....

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
THe HWRF winds have verifed thus far pretty darn well. about 90 percent of the 850 mb winds at each advisory... the new 18z HWRF just upped the game here more and this last pass of recon showing that Maria is still deepening. meaning it could approach what the HWRF 850 mb winds are forecast for the next 24 hours or so..

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
This is starting to feel like the Atlantic's version of Haiyan. Obviously, the cloud tops aren't as cold or the winds quite as strong, but you expect it to peak and begin to weaken. But it doesn't. It keeps looking better and better on satellite and then landfall happens.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
I have absolutely run out of words and never in my life thought a month like this would happen in the Atlantic. And then I am reminded of storms like Mitch and Wilma... we've still got to get through October in the WCarib.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.
