I’m not familiar with the Texas coastline, but based off the current NHC forecast, it seems the center would pass just north of Corpus Christi? Are there any other large cities near there, or would Houston be the next really large city?

Those saying Harvey would be the big one this season likely got it right as Harvey sure looks like it will be retired when all is said and done. Even if it were to remain weak and just be a flood event that would likely have been enough, just look at Allison (2001).

Scary situation. Been too many years since anything of this magnitude has come onshore. Many haven't experienced nor know what to expect and im so afraid they wait too late to leave and get stranded on the roads trying to leave.

Victoria is really the only sizable city down there other than Corpus. If you go further inland you have San Antonio and NE you have Houston, but, that's about it

Nothing that SouthernMet posts, is an official forecast, nor does it reflect views of STORM2K.. SouthernMet is just adding to the great discussions on STORM2K.. Refer to NWS for official forecasts.

I'm not too familiar either outside the Houston-Galveston part of the coastline. Would Harvey hit a rural part of the coast like Bret did in '99 on it's current forecast track?

I have seen systems ramp up in a 'anticipated' strengthening period..or a boosted strengthening period followed by a lull/rest, but I can't remember the last time I have seen something quite like this happen. And I can't remember the last time the NHC themselves seemed concerned with how it is now predicted to intensify. Usually they reassure during their updates as opposed to what we witness via ensemble models.

Rockport TX is very low elevation and will probably get some storm surge. I sure hope not, it's a beautiful city.

I wonder if they will evacuate, or have time to. It went from assuming to be nothing major to, well, this within only a day or two before arrival.

Thanks everyone! I believe Bret came ashore south of Corpus Christi and it doesn’t seem like much of anything there. It seems we would want Harvey to either go West more like Bret or hit north of Corpus Christi so it doesn’t hit a large town. It’s all going to come down to the final wobbles as it nears land. Stay safe all, regardless of landfall it’s going to cause some major flooding issues it seems.

Howdy Ya'll this is my second post - although I have lurked here for years. I live in Galveston by the Seawall mid-island. So far everything is quiet. I keep thinking (hoping) that this will just drop a ton of rain on us and NOT slide up the coast as a couple of models I have seen have shown.
I am prepared as best as I can be. I do not own a generator but I have candles. We get flooding in our house (its on the ground) anytime a tropical system passes our way so I am sure I will be mopping and then some no matter what barriers I put up. I appreciate reading all the information here. I am a programmer - not a meteorologist - but the science of it (some would dispute that! ) comforts me somehow and fascinates me. Thank you for keeping us all informed. Reading about weather patterns is simply awesome.....
