Looking at satellite...this thing is about to take off. Extremely vigorous convection, circling rapidly around the center...wow!

Center looks to be hovering right at 17N.

just doing some wobbling.. it crossed 17n a little bit ago. the eye/mid level eye is still slightly lopsided.

likely down to around 16.8n at the moment.

I'll certainly take that.

Don't.

TS Colin last yar was supposed to be a big nothing with squalls only. I had a 40' section of oak tree on my garage barely missing the living portion of my home AND lightning taking out my cable box, and other electronics despite protection. Add into that local flooding and "squalls" are nothing to be dismissed as wind gusts can reach 70 mph easily.

John, you can have similar results from severe thunderstorms in the summer.
If Irma passes to our East in the Bahamas which are about 100 miles away; we should get similar effects that we have gotten in the past.

I agree with txwatcher, the center appears to be hovering around 17N at the moment. This hole looks to be the eye clearing out with convection wrapping around, though looks can certainly be deceiving. Patiently waiting for next recon to get there...

if a hurricane tracked up the spine of the peninsula there would be "spread the misery" conditions but if the storm is tracking to your east you're going to need to be pretty close to get creamed. Look how benign conditions were over southeast florida as matthew passed by. or more recently, check out the gradient in the Corpus Christi area from Harvey.

Matthew scared a lot of people last year and with the horrific damage from Harvey fresh in people's minds they are taking this seriously.
As they should

incidentally there's been no hype in our media market that I've seen so far and stores have plenty of everything. the water shelf at my local Publix was fully stocked and stores have time to get extra shipments so hopefully they're doing that

Why do people refer to the media coverage as "Hype Machine"?
Don't we want coverage of a threatening storm so people get prepared?
If they don't report the storm, people will blame the media for ignoring it.
I think it is a vital public service to alert citizens and help them prepare to be safe.

Staying up for the Euro! Silly but it is what it is. Took advantage of the time and booked a hotel for Tallahassee next Sunday, just in case! Would only leave if we are close to a direct hit but better safe than sorry. May not be far enough or could be in the cross hairs at this rate! Had a room for Floyd I booked early and could not get to it. Will never evac during the day again!

You are on the gulf coast. That's why. Hype machines are rolling on the EC.

Is that the same meteorologist from WESH that you quoted a couple of days ago who said that they storm was no threat?
Or the one the next day who said something else???

We aren't in the cone yet. Still a couple hundred miles out. Wait until were in, theoretically early Tuesday, then the media gets rolling.

Yeah it's way too early to freak but people that don't have their basic supplies better get moving. at least stores have time to get new shipments...so that's the advantage of a long tracker.

if it went up the spine, do you think inland areas like Ocala would see Hurricane force winds?
