The Louisiana flood was a $10 billion dollar disaster on flooding alone. I agree with the assessment that this flood will easily exceed the $10 billion mark. If Allison is the water mark there, and this is the same or more rain over a much larger area, we looking at the floor with $10 billion.

I'm surprised there aren't more drone videos coming out of Houston yet. Lots of water around where various channels are broadcasting from. I'm assuming that background "thousands of homes flooded" that was inadvertently on TWC stream last night will be confirmed. But even the Chronicle doesn't have much on extent up to this point.

Wow, I was really getting worried for Houston last night with those intense bands but now it's getting REALLY REALLY bad out there...And this might still continue for an additional three days or more...

:uarrow: Wouldn't it be hard to get a drone up and running with the devastatingly flooding rains we're seeing?

Just incredible.
You can clearly see the COC moving SE back towards the coast during the past couple of hours.

KHOU had to evacuate for flooding and I suspect most are simply overwhelmed at the moment. Coast guard choppers are in the area, maybe it's not a good idea to fly drones.

GOES16 loop showing very slow storm motion. I believe some radar loops are indicating slow SE drift. Either way, you can see divergence aloft and incredible low level convergence near Houston. Terrifyingly dangerous situation. https://weather.us/satellite/texas/sate ... .html#play

The drone footage will start coming out as things clear and as the rivers reach flood stage. I want to point out that if you go out to do rescue bring a camera with you and take a picture of every home you pass, especially if you are close to the high water mark. My son and I went out on a boat with a camera just to take pictures and they were extremely valuable to our neighbors in showing how bad things got and thus getting claims paid. For those who are about to flood, take lots and lots of photographs. You never know what you will have to document.

I have no doubt about thousands. We, thankfully, are high and dry but many who never dreamed they'd get flooded now have water in their house.

Won't the moisture fetch increase the closer this thing gets to the coast? At least for areas in proximity to the CoC?

It will indeed. Especially if it moves back over water and new convection develops near the center associated with restrengthening

I have a drone that is registered with the FAA and I got an email Friday that said this.....

August 25 - The FAA warns unauthorized drone operators that they may be subject to significant fines if they interfere with emergency response operations. Flying a drone without authorization in or near the disaster area may violate federal, state, or local laws and ordinances, even if a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is not in place. Allow first responders to save lives and property without interference.

I know the Houston ABC station in Houston uses drones in their coverage at times and I haven't seen any footage from them. I'm sure the rain is keeping them from flying it currently.

Unfortunately, that was only because of the time of day. Looks at the SBCAPE projections; forecast to reach 3500-4000 over the Gulf by the +6hr timeframe.

If Allison caused $9 billion in damages Harvey will probably be at least double if not triple.

Hopefully many Houston residents remembered Allison and took Harvey's flooding risk seriously. But given how traumatic the Rita evacuation was for so many in Houston, I'm fearful that some who should have evacuated did not.

Once again, flooding proves to be the under-appreciated severe danger from hurricanes. Floyd, Matthew, Isabel, Irene, now Harvey...

We get so fixated on things like the wind speed, the category, the pressure, the landfall track, that folks out of the direct path sadly too often don't pay attention to the risk they face from the flooding. NHC has been really improving their messages about flooding risk, especially storm surge. But there's still work to be done to adequately help people prepare and be warned for inland flooding dangers.
