First, because a look at any baby names book should show that there aren't that many 'I' names to begin with; and second, three quarters of those that do exist have already been used to name violent hurricanes that had to be retired. And third, after retiring Irma and desperately searching for a replacement name, it would be a bit odd to have Ivanka and Don on the same name list... :D

On topic though, the setting sun is throwing really impressive shadows across Irma's terrifyingly even more intense looking eye... it's truly upsetting and I hate to see the islands deal with this, but I guess nothing at all can be done about it. I hope it hits as few islands in the Bahamas as possible but that remains to be seen.

Have we had an Immanuel yet? Because I am still waiting for the day I can make a joke about the more famous MIT professor. "Yo, Kerry, your storm is here."

Miami beach mayor stated no mandatory evacuation order yet, he stated it was because the storm slowed down and they have more time to decide.

I thought the storm was at 14 mph yesterday and today it's going 16mph.

Can't let Miami beach lose any revenue........

Yeesh. Always somebody has to insist you get back to work even when the roads are flooded. I guess we can't let even a devastating disaster get in the way of our all American profits.

Okay I probably should shut up now.

I just don't think that now is the time for sarcastic comments. Everybody is making decisions to the best of their ability.

Good grief, we're going to be getting into Patricia territory on satellite if the CDO keeps cooling significantly. I agree with the sentiment of this being a Pacific supertyphoon that is hopelessly lost. I really hope it curves north to ask for directions soon...

Colors of lost purpose on the canvas of irrelevance

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

It is ALWAYS the time for sarcastic comments. It's one of the only ways to stay sane when the world is falling apart.

I know the Carolinas are still a long way from impact, but I have family in NC, so I appreciate Brad Panovich providing clear & excellent updates. Anyone in the Carolinas should follow him...

Long time lurker, first time poster. Currently living in West Viera, FL (Brevard County, just NW of Melbourne, barely west of I-95). Lived in Broward County for a long time, familiar with hurricanes. Concrete block house built in 2010 is shuttered, added two braces to garage door, we are prepped to the best of our ability.

Question now is to stay or go. If we go, we have to do it soon. Looking for thoughts, specifically regarding NHC's 96-120 hour intensity predictions. Nothing seems to really be in the way of Irma keeping Cat 4-5 intensity, and yet the NHC is dropping it significantly by the 96-120 mark.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Amazed & thankful that NHC forecaster Eric Blake can still keep a sense of humor in the midst of what must be tremendous stress.

How thankful I am that we have such dedicated and excellent mets. They are incredible professionals.

But that was BEFORE the eye hit St. Maarten... so, I too am concerned, but I know most comms are down, so it could be awhile before we here. She's definitely in my prayers tonight - has been for the past 24 hours +

Heard from MsBee.
All safe, battered and bruised.
Sint Maarten was devastation. Total. Worse than Luis.
Looting occurring.
She's on a hill and has generator. No cell, no water, no radio nothing.
I am sitting in Miami on the edge of Biscayne Bay.
Waiting.

As terrible as the scenario unfolding looks like it might be for FL & the SE, I'm quite glad there seems to be emerging model consensus. Of course I WISH the emerging consensus was out to sea.

But, right now we don't need model wars and wiper-washer swings back & forth to increase hesitation and confusion about what to do. Better that the models are consistent. Though I earnestly hope that right now they are all CONSISTENTLY WRONG and somehow Irma could stay off shore.... But that's NOT what looks to be shaping up, I'm afraid.

Sitting here in northern Mississippi, it appears I'm outside the threat area...but still monitoring.

Still feeling very sick for everyone in its path though. We've had one epic disaster already and another is brewing.
