Re: ATL: HARVEY - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Finally reporting on TWC about releasing the water from the reservoirs and how it will flood surrounding neighborhoods. What a nightmare, the entire last 48 hours have been a nightmare. I feel for all the folks.

Why release those waters if it will cause much more damage?

Re: ATL: HARVEY - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Thus far, the new developing band seems to be of a different character from last night, as cloud tops are still rather warm with it. In spite of this, reflectivity and KDP is rather high, meaning the rainfall processes have to be hyper-efficient.

My family is in the zone of the reservoir release and they moved to higher ground this morning. I am glad they are doing a controlled release, an overflow would be much much more catastrophic than just inundating their relatively small region.

If a reservoir gets too full and overtops an embankment it can cause a catastrophic failure.

Do you have a safe way to get out if you need it?
There's only one way in and out of Pinewood. It's still passable on one side (not as deep), but rising.
A lot of people out here have boats, so that's an option.
I don't plan on leaving, however. My house is ok for now.

out of curiousity, anyone know what the max '' per hour bands were last night in houston?
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8" per hour in the core of the band.

Yes, they reported that earlier on a news conference. Not sure when they are going to do it, or if they already have, but they were letting local residents who would be affected, in order for them to evacuate.
According to the authority they are talking to on Kprc tonight they will start releasing tonight.
It will not reach Katy.
Looks like Buffalo Bayou will be flooded with a controlled release, homes flooded as far east as the Beltway? Hope the supports on the beltway overpass don't get washed out.

If they do not release the water they have to worry about Dam failure. That would put all that water into Houston Metro. Think Katrina

Y'all ok up there?
I don't know. I have given up trying to figure it out.

Oh, gee. Do you have a tarp?
Yeah but I can't put it up now. Fortunately, I found the spot and was able to cut my sheet rock away and put a bucket under it. So at least for now, it's contained.
Glad you found it and can get that tarp up later.
One thing after Frances we learned is to have a huge tarp on hand after seeing all the blue roofs surrounding our area.

Its controlled versus a dam break or over the top..i know it sounds harsh to release but its the best option..lot's of tough decisions and very tough news the next few daysmeriland29 wrote:Why release those waters if it will cause much more damage?

Exactly, so they have to make the decision to flood surrounding neighborhoods, or Houston Metro... Sad decisions like this have to be made.

That line looks like a broken up feeder line of mini-supercells. Be careful SG. This looks bad particularly if it stays over the same general areas. Ouch. Maybe Vidor, Orange, Vinton as well. Y'all be careful at the border.
Thanks. It's pouring and no signs of letting up anytime soon. More developing off the coast as well... I don't even know what to think anymore.

We are good. Got all the supplies and ready for what ever happens. The streets are flooding in Lumberton and school was cancelled for tomorrow. Mikes employer also cancelled Monday for him. Just hanging in there. I know your subdivision floods on a dime. I sent you a PM.
