New camera live from Hurricanetrack, monitoring the dam release flooding. You can see the wind picking up as well.

Holy poop. That's the story here. This will RUIN thousands of families.
Here is one of the articles:
http://money.cnn.com/2017/08/25/news/ec ... index.html
15 percent for Houston, and 20 percent for Corpus Christie... In Miami in quite a few areas, Flood Insurance is mandatory (including where I live); and I live a good 20+ miles from the shoreline too.

Prayers for them.

Means they live in an area above the 100 year flood plain. This is a 600 year flood so easy to see many will not have flood insurance

Any voluntary evacuations may become mandatory. Prepare for that, if you are staying, officials have warned.

There have been numerous evac upgrades. I'm following Jeff Lindner on twitter who tweets or retweets most notices.

Bevil Oaks has issued a mandatory evacuation. It says if you flooded in 1994, you will flood again. Pine Island Bayou is expected to crest at 31 ft.

I also heard abc13.com say that Lindler will be holding another press conference concerning the reservoir releases at 2pm about 1 1/2 hours from now.

Under no circumstances can these be allowed to over top, even if it means flooding the surrounding area with a controlled release.
A dam break basically would be Katrina all over again. Agreed some sacrifice is needed to save most of the communities.
This was one of the communities near the reservoir this morning after the first release.
I would consider that minor flooding. Doesn't seem to be getting into houses. But the next rounds may raise the levels higher.

I remember one time, a long while back, seeing a TC intensify in the Glades.
I know tropical storm Fay did, and I believe Katrina may have.
Back around "88 or so, one organized (became a depression) while center coordinates were over Lake Ponchartrain (north of New Orleans) well off the coast. It slipped down SE and was upgraded to a tropical storm while in the coastal waters (Lake Borgne) actually a bay which is SE of New Orleans. Seems like storm had a "g" name.
Better organization of Harvey is apparent. Pretty good chance, I think, that pressure falls and wind increases to 60-65 mph before second landfall. Just a guess.

It's insane not to have flood insurance in 2017. If you're not in a flood hazard area, the cost is minimal - like 50-75/month. It's partially subsidized, and premiums are rated on your specific flood zone. I was in disbelief when I found out about all the people in the Baton Rouge metro that didn't have flood insurance last year. A lot of people never flooded before. So unless you are wealthy enough to self-insure and cut your losses, if you have a ground floor, live in hurricane prone areas, watersheds, the south, etc., you really need to have it.

Is there a practical reason they wouldn't fly over the coast or is it a political jurisdiction thing?

FEma will kick in to help rebuild. If you have flood insurance then they will still help with a portion of the loss.
