I wonder why they don't just make all sides of 95 and turnpike northbound for now? I know they have the plans in place.

I'm pretty sure they do but I think they are still trying to send tanker trucks south bound to Miami.

Afterwhich, I believe, they will reverse traffic patterns on the southbound lanes...

That makes sense. I mean they could even keep an HOV lane open south for emergency services and fuel.

Would a stronger hurricane come out of it after it completes?

Bases on the last two fixes' distance Irma averaged 13-14 mph.

NHC probably will only lower the intensity to 145kt in the next advisory since the EWRC is already finishing up thus she can regain CAT5 winds pretty quick.

Also pressures is holding very steady for now.

typically yes. but not right away.. we shall see. the outer eyewall has to contract quite a bit still.

My parents live in Boca Raton and have boarded up all their 2nd Floor windows and all first floor east facing windows, however they do not have any protection for 6 sets of sliding glass doors in the back of the house which faces southeast...they plan to stay in the house for the storm...does anyone see any possible way that they will be safe in the house?

If any of the glass doors break, it could spell disaster. Lots of homes lost roofs when the garage doors failed, and their are some similarities, don't you think?

I am very worried for them...they won't leave because they have a safe room in the interior of the home that they plan to go into if the weather gets to bad. We have impact windows at our place and insisted they come stay with us but they are refusing because the "storms are never as bad as forecasted"

They will be in that room for a long time, eye may pass over or just west of there, and then the back side of the storm may cause the doors to fail, with the wind shift and the debris flying about. Saying prayers for all that are staying put...

I know she survived the storm safely, a few here have had contact with her. But conditions on the island sound beyond terrible

Thank you. I tried searching the thread and checked the check-in thread, but didn't find anything. So glad to know she is safe.

She posted a short while ago on the Jose discussion thread, making the observation none of those islands can take another hit.

I also have a feeling that they are hesitant to reduce the storm to a Category 4 as that has the potential to invite complacency. In my opinion, most of the track in the last two days will see a reduction in intensity.

Note: All of this is purely my opinion and has no grounded base in meteorological knowledge.

From an hor ago.. the outer eyewall seems to have already contracted pretty close to the inner per microwave. though the inner eyewall appears nearly gone... becasue of the outer contraction we may not lose the eye on IR too much..

this hurricane is pretty amazing..

image 2 hours old ..

I know it's a sensationalized story, sort of, but sad nonetheless.

"The legendary Ernest Hemingway home appears doomed ... an almost certain casualty of Hurricane Irma ... this according to local law enforcement.
The Key West home -- made of wood and built in the 1850's -- sits about 16 feet above sea level, which is the highest point on the island. Law enforcement tells us they're expecting at least 15 feet of water to flood the area ... so the outcome is bleak.
The Hemingway Home's manager, 72-year-old Jacqui Sands, has already said she's staying put to maintain the home and its 55 or so roaming cats. Jacqui and some staff are boarding up and bunkering down.
If Jacqui or her staff are injured, cops say they'll be left to fend for themselves, because hospitals, ERs, rescue crews and other government assistance will not be available."

The highest point in Key West is actually Solares Hill which, in KW terms, is no where close to the "Hemingway" House. No local, except perhaps for it's caretaker or those making money off of it, care much about what happens to it. Like much of old town, it's a tourist trap meant to separate visitors from their money, not that there's anything wrong with that.

NHC will keep it at 140 kt if the EWRC appears to be nearing an end.

Outer eyewall now stronger. Won't be much longer. A run at sub 900 tomorrow wouldn't surprise me.

Winds down to 165 MPH officially at 11pm.

The Weather Channel has the entire advisory and updated cone graphic before the NHC website. What's up with that?
