I'm seeing videos of people playing football and walking their dogs around in Key West

Hurricanes can do that? That's crazy.

YES. This is the kind of creepy stuff we saw around the coast before Ike happened. Ominous sign, for sure.

There is an area called Solares Hill just near the cemetery that has those elevations.....surprisingly high for an island many assume is all at sea level. I'm not sure if Solares Hill has ever flooded in recorded history?

The more you know... Damn. I wonder what's the scientific reasoning behind this.

Still only about 15mph here in neighborhood...Took last shower for probably a while...

They have expanded the surge zone evacuations to "D"...Germaine Arena Shelter full but taking people anyway...

Just have to set hurricane locks in garage doors...Use T Bar to shut off water main at street...And last exit shutters...Will do idiot check list before leaving...

Hope to see you after the storm...

Sanibel, praying you and all the other Storm2Kers (those in the surge zones in SW FL especially) stay safe. Really appreciate all you've posted here, and so glad you've been able to prep your house, and have a place to go. Stay safe. May you find much strength to get through this trial.

I've been using Snapchat's map feature to view recent clips from Key West. Conditions are quickly deteriorating, and so many people are out and about as if they are unaware that a major hurricane will soon be on top of them. I'm even more surprised that they haven't evacuated.

Solares Hill next to the Old Town Cemetery S of Fleming and East of Duval streets are the high point. Areas near and East of NWS Key West on Simonton drop dramatically to 4-5 foot above sea level as well as Key West Airport. The Salt Ponds around EYW are just a couple of feet above sea level. Upper Duval near where Sloppy Joe's is located is near 3 feet above sea level.

189 people died in Katrina in the 3 Mississippi coastal counties alone, mostly from surge...many never recovered as they washed back out to sea. This was not so long ago. We hear about mass casualties of the storms of the old days like Labor Day and Galveston and Camille. But the reality is that all it takes in the right setup and it only comes along so many years.... I'd like to think that we've learned those lessons from storms past. But I don't think we have. In most storms I think we are lucky that deaths in the US are not greater. Hopefully it won't be as bad on the keys as people fear. Maybe she will remain a cat 2/3 and it'll be bad but not island clearing. Only time will tell.

I'm watching this. I mean... what is there left to say? I saw another piece of video that claims to be in KW and water was pushing into the streets and waves going over houses: CBS has inquired about the clip already, but I won't post it here until it's confirmed...
