I'm safe. Lost power at 7:30am yesterday morning. Still out now.

I woke up yesterday at 7am, and the last of the storm I saw was it's approach to the Keys. The 00z models slightly shifted east, with the UKMET and HWRF taking it inland before 82W. When I saw radar looks at 7am, it looked like Irma was moving almost due north overnight. So I went into the outage with a hunch that Irma might landfall a bit more east than forecast.

From late Friday until late Sunday, the weather was bad. This was the longest storm I've been through, given Irma's massive size. Solid Cat 1 gusts on Saturday from 1pm-4pm. 8ish inches of rain. Driving around Broward County today, good Cat 1 damage. Lots of trees down, branches and shrubbery in the streets, several intersections blocked off. Looks like a couple days of cleanup. Worse than Francess/Jeane for us, but not as bad as Wilma.

And is that the 12z UKMET showing Jose looping around to Florida? No thanks...

Me and my folks are ok and we just got our power back twice after losing it around 10 last night. The winds were unlike I've seen so far. My estamite would be 50-60 mph with gusts to 70-75. There was tree that fell access the street on the road, so me, my Dad and our neighbors helped to clear what we could so the the road is clear now. There is also more debris eveywhere, more than Matthew and the winds gusts still ongoing is making hard to clean up, but the wind field should clear out soon. We also have some shingle damage, but don't know to what extent yet. The flooding in and surrounding Downtown created by the storm surge is something we haven't seen since 1846 per NWS. It's bad in St. Augustine and the county too, but it should recide after high tide.

Up over 1 million power outages in Georgia as well now - that number will likely continue to rise rapidly. Not sure the numbers from SC or AL.

Lots of damage here in Orlando today, the street we live on was impassable due to downed trees. We had a tree uproot in both the front and back of our house. Our bedroom flooded due to water buildup and it came in through the sliding glass door. We do still have power but our apartment building's air conditioner isn't working.

They must not be used to TC conditions. Tropical storm conditions will probably be considered 'severe' for them.

Does anyone know what the max winds were in Orlando, FL last night and if we got hit with a Cat 2 or 1?

It seemed like it was Cat 2 and that's the last I saw before it got really bad.

:uarrow: Wow. That's crazy. I would guess that the folks in Jacksonville weren't expecting it to be quite like that for them.

Tampa, Jacksonville, and Miami had some remarkable flooding from surge. It's disturbing to think what the damage will be WHEN one of those cities takes a direct strike from a large and strong hurricane.

It seemed like it was Cat 2 and that's the last I saw before it got really bad.

According to NWS Melbourne, top gusts include: Azalea Park 84 MPH, Orlando International Airport 79 MPH, Orlando Executive Airport 78 MPH

Many stations weren't reporting last night, so wind gusts could have potentially been higher west of the Orlando metro as the eyewall passed over

I wonder what Rockledge was. According to WeatherBug the highest I saw was 86 but it was really blowing last night

Actually tampa had very little surge flooding. Fortunately, the storm tracked east in Polk County and weakened considerably on its southern eyewall. West winds were considerably weaker than the northeast quad after the storm treked north.

What kind of infrastructure investment would we need to protect these cities from the big one?
