The last tropical cyclone of any intensity to directly impact Maui was back in 1871. Let alone a major.

Wow, was watching TWC and official at news conference said most of the shelters aren't built to withstand any winds higher than tropical storm force. Hopefully the HWRF is overdoing the winds and/or location.

Upper level outflow is fantastic. mid level not so much.. but despite that. ring of deep convection has returned despite the shear. It has also become more symmetric again.

Reed Timmer will be there according to Accuwx. I think the window is quickly closing for any incoming chasers. Airports are shutting down tommorow.

Why is there such a difference between the EURO and GFS?

It's another model war to end all model wars...

He's a zombie hurricane, shear keeps trying to kill him, and he just keeps getting back up

Lane seems to be moving faster than forecast track... Maybe it delays that W turn down the road and allows Lane to get farther N???

The sad part about this is the rain volume and mudslides. For those who haven't been there, the islands are just not equipped for storms like this. God help those folks out there.

The unfortunate part is we wont get a full view of the core on radar until sometime tomorrow since the high terrain creates a dead zone.
