Also no real reason to have recon out there anymore. everything is mostly on shore.
Ed Rappaport from the NHC was on the weather channel about an hour or so ago talking about recon going out to try and find the center, They were talking about the center being hard to see on radar.

Recon hasn't been in the storm since 17z. They'll be in Gordon shortly though. Using radar obs isn't anything new for storms approaching landfall, although we usually have recon during that time which takes precedence.
Swath of 70-75kt winds on radar (75% or 80% reduction at that level) have moved onshore with the band now, so we'll see what they find.

Re: ATL: GORDON - Tropical Storm - Discussion
The winds on the west side of the system are also just out of the NE. Looking at buoy reports, I don't see any NW/W or SW winds at all aimed at the center. Just a wide swath of NW winds from the FL. Panhandle all the way into MS/LA. If I didn't have a radar presentation to look it, just going off the wind obs, I'd say this was a frontal system with lots of gales...

yeah all day today the circulation has been elongated to the west with abnormally weak west and Sw winds away from the center.
the low level flow around the large ridge has kept Gordon in check.

Just got back from the beach in Pass Christian. Beautiful evening. Wind was starting to pick up a bit...that darn stinging sand. Still thinking old Gordo makes landfall to my east and passes to my north tonight. Everyone stay safe.....MGC

Oh I was talking about this afternoon when the plane was finding ~45 kt and they raised it from 55 to 60 kt. It was pretty clear to me in the data that the plane never found winds to support the NHC, so they were using the radar over recon obs

Steady rain here, nothing hard..just steady. I doubt we've had a wind gust over 20 mph. ( About 10 miles NE of Pensacola)

Looks like a slight pressure drop found by recon so far.

WLOX in Biloxi is reporting they expect landfall in Jackson County near Pascagoula. Looking at the radar it appears to have resumed a WNW motion.....MGC

Re: ATL: GORDON - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Recon found a few things, including that the low-level circulation is aligned with the radar center, and that the pressure has fallen significantly to 997.5mb. 50kt surface winds in the small section they've sampled.

Re: ATL: GORDON - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Over here in west Mobile about 10 miles from the MS line and 10 miles from the coast and I haven't seen a wind gust over 10mph yet. That might change on the eastern side, but it looks like the cloud tops have warmed dramatically over the last couple of hours.
There was one probably around 30mph but back to dead still again. Radar shows that main band still about 10-15 miles to the east so we'll see.

Re: ATL: GORDON - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Radar shows storms wrapping around the south side of the circulation. Last ditch effort.

On my radar display, the center is at 29.7N, 87.7W (2340z). Oh, recon just found the center. Looks like 87.7W. Not much wind at all around the center.

Recon extrapolation is 997mb
The pressure dropped? Impossible. I thought it was a naked swirl with a light breeze

In all seriousness, it may be making one final effort here to strength into Hurricane Gordon. Glad we have recon in the area.
