Well the outflow and symmetry and outflow of Florence looks healthier than it has in quite some time.

They might have dropped a buoy in that location to determine wind speeds, upwelling, etc as I know they’ve been dropping some the past few days.
You are correct, they dropped a dropsonde 120 miles SW of the eye, tropical force winds reported at the surface. It is on the move again.
Can we track the flight live ?

High definition cameras outside the International Space Station captured new views of a somewhat weakened Hurricane Florence at 6:56 a.m. EDT Sept. 13 as it neared the U.S. Eastern seaboard.

Wilmington is a ghost town now.
Wind picking up you can tell something is much different than yesterday.
I like Buys Ballot Law where you put your back to the wind and stick your left arm out. Your left arm will be pointing at the eye of the hurricane.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

Looks like the core has been disrupted, resulting in an expansion and subsequent drop in the pressure gradient. Same pressure, lower winds. May be down to a Cat 1 now, but strongest winds may be in the NW quadrant where the eyewall remains intact. Plane could find 80-85 kts there.

It's looking mighty healthy this morning! Better than most of yesterday. You think NHC may put out special statement if it kicks back up to cat 3 before 11? Looks very probable that it's there now to my untrained eyes!

I don't think they would just to bump it by 5 or 10 kts. In any case there's recon in the storm right now and no evidence of increased winds that I've seen.

I doubt that it will get back up to a Cat 3 by that time, any significant further strengthening may happen later today or tonight, it has to finish getting rid of that dry air slot that got entrained into it yesterday. IMO.
