It has been misquoted. It was quoted as a storm of a lifetime for some areas in the Carolinas.

And it will be, I think people will be very surprised by the amount of damage she causes. Things are going to get ugly in a hurry.

Just had our first feeder band here in Greenville. Winds picked up quite a bit and hard steady rain. Just as quickly as it came though, it stopped and now its just breezy. If it gets interesting here (big storm so we should get some winds) I will take some video to add to the mix. Oh, and I'm glad I evacuated (for several reasons) but one is that the power is already going out in Carteret County. Its the least of the impacts but it sure is miserable to sit through a storm with no power.

You have a valid point, wx98. My comment wasn't directed at you at all, and I apologize if I made it seem that way.

Recon confirms the westward heading of Florence during the past couple of hours, since earlier this morning it went from a heading of 310-330 degrees to 296 degrees now at 270 degrees.

No offense taken. I think my comment was originally taken as meaning the entire basin is hostile, which is obviously not the case. Florence can attest to that.

He tweeted over an hour ago water has probably risen 2 to 3 feet. Lines up with Jeff Piotrowski's footage of the surge coming in down at Topsail Beach.

Ok I bailed from parking garage in Wilmington as they close all bridges onto the island when winds hit 45 mph.

Don’t want to be stuck for a week with flooding. Am sitting in a little town called Leland, NC just west of Wilmington.

The feeder bands have some stronger gusts now and I suspect big branches will start blocking roads in a few hours.

Going to wait here and watch this thing roll in.

I do have escape routes and highway bridges to go to within a mile.

Not concerned with wind but with flooding.

Paying close attention.

Hurricane force winds extend 160 miles, 80 miles from center out, tropical storm force winds extend 390 miles, 195 from center out.

Florence is a large hurricane. Hurricane-force winds extend outward
up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force
winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km). NOAA Buoy 41025,
located near Diamond Shoals, North Carolina, recently reported a
sustained wind of 54 mph (87 km/h).

Huge storm and wind field.
