It does seem like the small ones are more likely to RI. Andrew and Wilma(when in the Caribbean) are others that went boom.

I suspect it's just turning around, not wanting to fly over land at storm altitude.

Hurricane hunters deploy airborne dropsondes. They hit the water as they fall through the storm. If it hits land, they break and present a hazard for anyone on the ground.

They don't fly low level over land. They'll likely turn south soon and head back around the peninsula to the center of Gordon.

Gordon's COC is tightening nicely. I am confident that he will become a potentially very formidable hurricane.

I just made a post about the radar appearance of Gordon, but in the last 15 minutes, Gordon has improved even more. Having radar in a situation like this is critical to evaluate the organization processes that happen in budding cyclones. I am thoroughly impressed with Gordon right now.
