Agree with you Hammy

That makes 4 years in a row with a cat 5. That ever happened before?

Cat 5 tracking into an anti-cyclone.
Now I see the hot-pink donut.
That sick feeling when I thought this goes sub 900mb before all said and done, just came back to me.

Hello everyone I am J, I've been lurking in the shadows for over a decade...Thank you for all the information you have given me. Waiting until this evening for the decision to put storm shutters up... eye on storm is an understatement.

You would think at sub 930, a thumb ridge may fork on top of this...

Four years with a category five in a row is a record (the previous being three - 2003-04-05) and incredibly it's looking like a record three years straight with category five landfalls. Remember when that was a rare thing?

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Once a storm hits sub 900mb does it take on any special properties? Has a sub 900mb Storm ever hit the US? Just curious...

There's been as many Category 5 landfalls in the Atlantic in the last 3 (Irma, Maria, Michael, Dorian) years as the previous 30 (Dean, Felix, Andrew, Gilbert).

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

there has been a few sub 900mb Atlantic storms (Wilma at 882 comes to mind) but none have made landfall at that intensity

3rd year in a row with a landfalling cat-5 seems likely now, with Irma, Michael and now Dorian.
Dorian itself replaced a landfalling cat-5 I believe...
Anyway amazing hurricane. I fear for all on the island, the buildings will have the ultimate test, a strengthening cat-5 into landfall.

The great Labor Day Hurricane 1935 hit Florida sub 900. As far as I know it's the only sub 900 landfall in the Atlantic.
