1. Showers and thunderstorms have increased this evening in association
with a broad area of low pressure over the central Caribbean Sea.
However, satellite-derived winds indicated earlier today that there
is no closed circulation. Environmental conditions are expected to
gradually become more conducive for development, and a tropical
depression is likely to form during the next couple of days while
the system moves westward at 15 to 20 mph. Interests in Jamaica,
northern Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and the Yucatan
peninsula should monitor the progress of this disturbance.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...70 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...80 percent.

Maybe they’re waiting on ASCAT to confirm?

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Yeah, it might confirm this is already a tropical storm

It looks better than TD 15.

The circulation seems to be mostly in the mid levels at this point.

Looks 5 times better then 15 does when judging for structure. ;) Of course some of these westward moving tropical waves have a hard time closing off an LLC so some of them do look impressive but aint quite tropical cyclones. Examples; Claudette, Fay...This system honestly reminds me a little of earl 2016, Ernesto 2012, karl 2010, etc. Some of the hurricane models do suggest a favorable environment so it wouldn't surprise me.

Regardless of what you want to call 99L ... it looks like Jamaica is about to have a day

Yeah look out Jamaica. If I didn't know any better and just crawled out of a cave to look at this I'd say this was looking to shoot the Yucatan / Cuba gap.

If the center forms farther north that could have major implications on track and a hurricane becomes more likely.

Looking at the spin (still could be mid-level) & current structure, sure looks like its on its way to a TD or TS soon.

It has been a mid level circulation following the mid level steering BAMM and likely had a few low level vorts feeding these bursts. I call these systems tumbleweeds because you never know where the LLC will finally take root until the forward speed eases. If this gets initialized as a TS further north near Jamaica the models are likely to respond by using some very different parametric data. Can you beat your computer at chess? The NHC is wise just to wait a day or two because they are probably wondering what the computer models might do as well.

The NHC is also wise to get a plane out there for tomorrow instead of today. I think they figured the central and more western Caribbean was where it was gonna find it’s roots.

Now I think this might have a chance to beat TD15 to become Nana again since that system isn’t looking the hottest atm...we’ll see what Recon finds tomorrow!

Should take the name Nana from TD #15 as that doesn’t look like it’ll amount to much.
