Yes the flight earlier today that eventually measured a cat 5 winds hit a bird during take-off so they had to switch planes. That's why that mission was delayed by ~1 hour.
I was wondering why there were 2 mission 6s listed on tropical tidbits. I thought they just got the flight number wrong or something
I heard that too about the birdstrike....friend of mine told me...

The eye is cooling a bit on IR imagery, indicating that a slight weakening trend might be starting. Iota is probably a high end Cat 4 by now.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Eye looks more symmetrical than ever. I really doubt this has weakened much. Maybe it's a tad weaker at 155mph but that's it.

Final recon mission not all that far away now

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

It is November 16th and we have the strongest storm of the year...this is just insane.
I can only hope those in harm's way have heard the warnings and taken taken measures to save lives. The wind, surge, flood and landslide threat for Iota is off the scale. The US has never faced a storm that had this much catastrophic potential.

Convection warming a little on the east side but the eye is very symmetrical now. I'm thinking recon finds a similar storm to the last pass. 135-140kts, similar pressure

Maybe there was an eyewall meld that just finished up. That would explain the now-gone concentric eyewalls and the slight cooling of the eye.

Might not be a C5 landfall but as far as I know could set the pressure record for landfall in Nicaragua at least. Super impressive.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Sunsetting over Iota. Landfall should occur in the next few hours

Notable warming of convection on the east side although the eye is as symmetric as ever. Maybe it's colder waters or shear? Still a monster cane regardless.

I'm guessing that's a pretty flat beer by now...

Coldest convection is now firing on the downshear side of the storm (western semicircle), so this combined with the slightly cooler eye suggests that this is probably a Category 4 now.
Regardless of exact intensity, this is a catastrophic event unfolding for Nicaragua.

New recon shows winds in the northern eyewall have come down some, pressure up maybe a mb or two.

The N quadrant is unusually weak — 120/125 kt FL, and only 90/95 kt SFMR. Recon also wasn’t able to get the lowest pressure, although it’s still in the high 910s.
