Slowly working to improve its structure after surviving the peaks of Cuba.

My hunch is that we may see it strengthen just a tad before its final landfall in Cuba.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

And bigger population centers with longer evacuation times. Bad combo.

When we left for Rita it was a scramble because of the last minute slide up the coast. We met many Houston people evacuating thru east Texas because of how bad traffic was getting out of Houston. Another reason to leave early simce evacuees from other areas may add to the traffic.

And this outlook from ortt should come as no suprise to anyone on this board. We knew since Saturday this system was going to intensify to a 2/3 in the gulf, at least. The way this ridge has behaved, i wouldnt be susprised if it comes in 100 miles south of the current track.

Yeah evacuating for Rita was a total disaster. We decided last minute to stay home, thankfully. I was in High School then though, hah. Had many people that got stuck for 6-8 hours to just make College Station, and close to 24 hours to Dallas.

Could be an absolute zoo. I know many people are uncomfortable leaving at night but it is often better than sitting in stopped traffic for the day.

Think tomorrow morning is too late?

No, but it will be packed on the roads. I would try to leave by 430 to get fairly far before congestion clogs up the roadways.

I agree. We left Dickinson at 5am before Rita and it took us 24 hours to get to Livingston. I have never done that again. If you think you might want to leave, do yourself a favor and don't wait. People were suppose to leave certain areas at certain times so as not to congest the roads but that's not the way it happened at all.

I couldn't find an immediate link to the press conference announcement but it's legit. It's all over Twitter.

The sooner you get ahead of the crowd the better. The worse that could happen by leaving earlier is that you spend a few bucks for your peace of mind and safety.

Here is a link to the Houston Chronicle referencing today's 1 pm press conference with Houston Mayor Turner and Harris County Judge Hidalgo.

That is why I prefer late departure but middle of the night. Allows for track changes and intensity forecasts to be taken into account. It only takes one bungled evac attempt to change your whole perspective on what makes more sense.

I like the middle of the night thing, but we have a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old, so that's pretty difficult on my wife. Granted - getting stuck in hours upon hours of traffic would be equally as bad.

Leaving in the middle of the night when they are sleepy/sleeping would be ideal. My daughter was 18 months old when we evacuated for Rita. Took 17 hours to go from Beaumont to Hemphill. Was the worst experience of my life!

Stands to reason the upper level winds that sheared Marco should have a similar effect on Laura.

Curious to see if some of the dry air mass over Mexico will move into the western gulf like earlier this week, or slide down to the Pacific. General conditions are far from ideal, but Laura has certainly held her own regardless. http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/ramsdis ... display=24
