Re: ATL: LAURA - Tropical Storm - Discussion
Got out of Port Arthur last night while traffic was clear and now heading to Dallas. I watched a FB live last night with KFDMs Greg Bostwick, who is usually very calm and informative without hyping. His demeanor last night was very telling.
Two main points he mentioned:
1) If Laura isn’t a Cat 3 near landfall, then it’s because she’s a 4.
2) Predicting a 20 ft storm surge potential and is concerned about worst case scenario of a landfall west of Sabine/Port Arthur
Needless to say, that wasn’t comforting news

I think RI won’t start until Laura gets large/taller mass of t-storms over her center

Theta-E ridge is expanding out.
Laura will have longer now to strengthen.

The winds just keep getting stronger NE of the eye. Could make a big difference being on the “bad” side of this storm at landfall.

Aren’t you under a hurricane watch? You should be ready for hurricane force winds and storm surge if you’re near the coast.

An expanding ridge would mean potemtial of farther west movement.

I would be very vigilant for sure. If you’re in a low-lying area or a weak structure, I’d plan to stay somewhere high and sturdy for a couple of days as a precaution in case Laura tracks further southwest.

Concerned and watchful. You will be in the cone at 5 and possibly at 11. Chances are you will miss the core and should be fine.

Watch the poleward expansion closely. Once the dual outflow channel completes then it'll be time to really get going.

In areas where high levels of Theta-E are pooling, called a Theta-E ridge, this is where convective precipitation is the most likely. You can use this technique in the Summer and Winter to pinpoint the potential for convective precipitation
