Recon just started transmitting again and is beginning to enter the storm. We should have a center pass within the next half an hour or so.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Iota really exploded in areal extent of convection overnight. I don't think there's really anything but an ERC that may disrupt RI the next 24 hrs. I'd expect the eye to clear out later today. My heart goes out to the poor people of Central America that will get hammered by torrential rain, storm tides, and wind from a major hurricane twice in two weeks.

The signs were already there last night unfortunately, lots of cold towers were firing off in all the bands.

The warm spot in the center seems to appear right around the spinning towers going off again, looks like its finally clearing

Iota is "fisting" (intensifying)...Will this be a record as far as intensity climatology?...

Recon data looks unimpressive.

If you look at visible the eye is much more apparent. CDO starting to look like a buzzsaw. Clearly intensifying despite the recent warming of cloud tops. Classic evolution.

12z HWRF makes Iota to CAT4 status by the 24hr mark.

976mb, so its trailing behind the latest HWRF run...
Peak SFMR only 59 kts in the NE eyewall

Wind measurements are surprisingly low, but the pressure has dropped to below the NHC’s 10am estimate. The second pass should determine how fast Iota is deepening.

This is looking like just a temporary hiccup. Iota is very well organized with a closed eye, and over the last several runs, the HMON and HWRF have dropped the idea of an EWRC. One is still possible but I doubt it could occur in time. I think we might have another RI-until-landfall scenario on our hands...just stop it 2020.

The likelihood of a 20 nm closed eye undergoing EWRC is pretty slim, its already large enough and stabilized...

20 nm isn’t that big. I’d say an EWRC is possible, but perhaps dry air might erode some outer bands and prevent them from becoming an outer eyewall.

Or could the system just be too large to intensify quickly? It is a large system and if memory serves me.right, large systems take time

On IR it almost looks kind of like Ike when the core got totally blown out after going over most of the length of Cuba, but microwave shows that's not really the case.
