A cat 5 is definitely possible. Though at this point there isn't much of a difference between a high end cat 4 and a cat 5. This is going to be a disaster. If it reaches cat 5 intensity only 5 or so hurricanes have made landfall in the US. Michael in 2018 and then Andrew in 1992...definitely not an often thing. Even cat 4 landfalls are rare too

Re: ATL: LAURA - Hurricane - Discussion
I thought I heard this morning on TWC that power outages could occur as far away as Asheville.
I remember it because my sister lives there and always teases me about staying in FL in "hurricane territory."
That’s funny, my sister moved to Asheville in February and tells me no more hurricanes for her lol. She lived in Port St. Lucie most of her life. Power outages will be all across the SE states
I moved from Palm City to Southeast Alabama and thought no more hurricanes! Then Michael happened and I had a giant tree on my house.

What are you following it on? Recon has it NW last 2 fixes I believe but I haven’t checked radar
Longwave IR loop on tropical tidbits.
It might be heading NW, its a little hard to tell sometimes whether its moving WNW or NW.

After reading what Piotrowski said about chasers already trapped by the surge, I'm am concerned that some of amateur storm chasers and thrill seekers do not have a good contingency and escape plan if things go bad, especially since the surge potential has doubled in height since last night.
Remember Adair's narrow escape from surge during Michael...that was unreal watching his vehicle bob up and down in the surge.

Wow didn’t realize this storm was moving so fast. Can you imagine if this thing was moving slower over these warm waters?

It's a difference for the historical records. I still think Jose should have been upgraded back in 2017

Looks like I might catch the eye. Looks like other chasers are starting to show up!

As Laura has blown up today, I keep thinking back to this post from you earlier as she was starting to ramp up:
Am here in Houston and am preparing the chaser truck to head for Port Arthur vicinity Wednesday morning. Parking lot garages are few and far between out that way. It may be a get to the coast, tuck my tail and scurry inland a ways.
Have been thinking Cat 4 for a day or so but there is a small part of me thinking Cat 5. Purely an educated guess. Michael surprised everyone and went Cat 5
Looks like you've nailed it thus far- time will tell if she makes the push to Cat 5 or not. Best of luck with the chase; stay safe.

I would be relieved, there would be more upwelling of the relatively shallow high temperature gulf waters, and internal dynamics could easily weaken the storm after it peaked

I can't get over at how big the eye has gotten today. What a huge swath of hurricane force PLUS winds that will be carried DEEP inland.

There have been several Tornado warnings
so far today and yet no watches issued.
How is that? I think someone at NWS is
sleeping on the job.

I'm not a meteorologist, I'm an electronics engineer. While I can probably fix your toaster oven, you're not going to learn about storms from me!

I still can't believe a group of them, may or may not be users here, who parked their car right in front of Tyndall 2 years ago and filmed Michael while on 98. They're lucky to have not been side swiped by half a pine tree. Not sure if they hunkered at the entrance where the example wrecked car was...

I just had the first band come through with some very heavy rain and wind gusts approaching TS strength by my estimation. It didn't last long but I my lights blinked a couple of times so I figure to lose power at some point but between my home backup and two portable gennys I will be good LOL. I am not expecting much in my area from the storm but I sure do feel for those that are goning to be in the direct path of this monster. This is gonna be much worse than audrey in 57. I just hope most of the people evacuated. The flooding is gonna be unprecedented in the areas around lake charles. Unreal that she is still dropping pressure like a rock and still intensifying.
I do have a question though. Earlier it looked like the winds were taking awhile to catch up with the pressure drops. Is this still the case with the pressure dropping and the wind still increasing.? If that is still true then we are seeing the winds from earlier drops and more wind speed increases are coming from the more recent drop.
Tim
Spend a good bit of time in Cut Off, prior to heading offshore in Fourchon.
Hope Cheramies is fine!
