The current BoM forecast indicates the possibility of a Cat 3 landfall somewhere along the Pilbara coast:

Looks like it’s already a TD. The GFS and HWRF show quick development and intensification, with a 969 mbar and 958 mbar storm, respectively, at landfall between late Friday and early Saturday.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Did the JTWC forget the 18z update for Damien?

Damien might be trying to go pinhole in the 18-24 (or less) hours it has before landfall: https://www.weathernerds.org/satellite/ ... rnerds.png

Eye is clearing with temps of >10 C. This could be a Cat 3 by the next advisory, and a Cat 4 before landfall isn’t out of the realm of possibility yet.

The town of Karratha (pop. 16.7k) is about to enter the eye of Cyclone Damien. The airport station is currently reporting 10-minute sustained winds of 81 kt, a maximum gust of 100 kt and a pressure of 966.6 hPa.

Also note that eyewall mesovortices are clearly visible on the Dampier radar:

Looks like the pressure dropped to 957 mb in the eye there with about 12 kt of surface winds. BOM's 955 mb landfall estimate looks very reasonable (and probably based off that data).
