Is a legit Tropical Storm. It tracked right over the gulf stream in the perfect time of the day and got a break from the wind shear.

Buckle up your seat belts everyone!! I knew this potentially could be one hell of a busy season. Two named storms before June 1!!

Yeah, I would definitely be safe to assume we are in for a wild ride this 2020 North Atlantic Hurricane Season!

At this point.. even statistically.. probably not a bad idea to extend the start of the hurricane season to the same time as the pacific.. if not just make it May 1st lol

Was Bertha’s origins more tropical this time around? I’ve heard having early systems of pure tropical origin is more indicative of a potentially active season versus subtropical development at higher latitudes.

Yes this was a pure tropical origin. A wave infact.

I am trying to recall the last time the North Atlantic basin having two named storms before the Eastern Pacific basin spawned any prior to June 1. It is not common seeing the North Atlantic basin so active this early ahead of the Eastern Pacific.

Hmmm... Neither of these has been, though. Both formed east of ULLs.

I don't believe so. I believe Bertha was spawned from a stalled frontal boundary so not really 'tropical' in nature I guess you would say.

Is as if the atmosphere is loaded this year in the Atlantic Basin and tropical systems will not have problem developing and intensifying quickly, it will be a busy one, that's for sure. IMO.

I know its only may... but if this thing had even just 12 hours more over water I would be concerned!! Got it's act together very quickly, still organizing very fast right now.

it may have interacted with a trough but its origin was a tropical wave that traveled through the Caribbean. if you recall the original title of this thread was "system in the NW carribean"

Yes, it was born out of a dying frontal boundary but it acquired tropical characteristics when it formed just north of the Bahamas, then it acquired some subtropical characteristics when it tracked over cooler waters before it moved over the warm gulf stream and it again acquired tropical characteristics.

Aric is correct, Bertha did formed out of a pure tropical wave/trough, the interaction with the ULL did helped to form the low pressure over FL like it usually happens this time of the year. It was not right underneath the ULL so it makes it tropical.

As NDG pointed out, Bertha traversed directly over the Gulf Stream overnight and she pulled together very quickly. The magic of the Gulf Stream!!
You can actually see the development of a CDO on visible satellite imagery on her approach to landfall currently. Yes Bertha is rapidly intensifying right up to landfall.
Man if this had only 2-3 ,hours more over water, we may have had a hurricane here.

Not sure if this link will work ..

but here is the wave entering the NW carrib then begin to interact with the trough.

I’ve been thinking this myself. May storms seem to be becoming a yearly thing, so just extend it to May 15 like EPAC.
