Good on the NHC; they're going to have enough to deal with in this year's postseason analysis as is. Alpha is/will be the first STS/TS to make landfall in Portugal in the satellite era, correct?

That is correct.

Mainland Portugal I assume, not including Azores.

Yeah I think it's right there on the edge.

The area of responsibility of RSMC Miami for issuing tropical and subtropical cyclone
advisories is the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, North Pacific Ocean
eastward from 140ºW.

I wonder what would happen if a tropical cyclone crossed the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean? Would the NHC maintain control?

When this thing looked like it was moving south of the models I posed this question in a tropical weather chat. I can't imagine the NHC would drop it even if it were outside of their area of responsibility, and that might be what it would take to officially recognize Mediterranean TCs.

I will not be surprised if they put the development date to in the night hours or even yesterday, earlier than Wilfred's formation in the post-season analysis.

This also ties the record for most storms in September (or any month) with 8, with 12 days to go...

NHC was right to pull the trigger. In fact they could probably push genesis back 24+ hours in postseason analysis.

I would also argue for a fully tropical classification as well.

Could it be in post season analysis they push back genesis a full 24-36 hours and have it as a Tropical system that got close to hurricane strength before landfall?

We'll more than likely break the record with 22 in the next day or so.

Best Track already named Beta now. Next advisory will be the first time two greek storms names exist at the same time! 2005 Gamma I think dissipated about the same time Delta got named.

Tornadoes are not very rare in Portugal, especially compared to the other parts of the Iberian Peninsula (however, it is true that they are much rarer than on the German-Poland plain for example). Here is a map from the European reported tornadoes between 2000 and 2012:

Right up there with Imelda last year, which made landfall within an hour and a half of being classified as a depression (and within 45 minutes of being upgraded to TS).
