I think Ida heard the S2K comments on her underperforming and got super pissed off

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Recon in several hours will likely find at least a Cat 3, maybe higher. I can't imagine what the people in NO and surrounding areas are about to go through tomorrow. Definitely praying and hoping for the best...

Are there any projects/plans or testing/prototypes of a unnamed aerial drone(ie like ones used for military) for hurricane reconnaissance?
Or does the nature of hurricanes/tropical systems that require onboard human controlled flights?
Man, the US needs newer planes and/or more updated/better maintenance for the fleet of Hurricane Hunters....better funding....
rant over

Back to Ida, hopefully this will be less than forecast but still time for for Ida to get bigger/stronger/more dangerous at landfall...Prayers....

You would think there would be plenty of Air Force C-130s to cannabilize parts from, however the WC-130 is a bit different than the military versions so I do not know how much useful parts they can find.

With the Navy retiring the P-3 fairly recently, you would think there would be plenty of birds to cannabilize too, but again the WP-3 is a bit different than the old Navy Orions.

It is unfortunate when a mission has to be aborted when a deadly storm approaches the coast. NOAA and the Air Force need to get some funding to maintain their Hurricane Hunters fleet. Maybe in the future we will do weather recon with drones, but given the nature of the job they need big planes with multiple turbo prop engines to handle the stress. I do not know of any operational drone that could survive the eyewall of a hurricane.

The next 12-18 hours are crucial. As bystanders we can oy hope there are no more issues with the aircraft.

Like I said, this is eerily reminiscent of Eta from last year. We need more missions like those for Irma, Michael, or Dorian, especially when it comes down to a major hurricane threatening lives.

Those last few frames look very impressive for Ida.

Ugh and we have to wait awhile for the next recon mission. Going to be a long 6 hours...

A repurposed MQ9 Raptor could do it. The problem is the dropsonde and stuff and some of those drones are quite frankly really expensive you would just hate to lose them.

Next Air Force hurricane hunter recon scheduled to arrive in center of Hurricane Ida at 3:30am CDT. Scheduled to take off at 1:15am CDT. Next NOAA P-3 mission is an 8hr research mission that departs from Lakeland, FL at 3am CDT. From "Plan of the Day": https://nhc.noaa.gov/recon.php

Might be pragmatic to modify the "plan of the day" given what's going on.

See these tweets and replies from July when I asked a hurricane hunter about an early departure.
