And props to the police chief on the Grand Isle webcam feed. So calm and sensible in the midst of that mayhem. Hopefully people watching the Grand Isle destruction on the weather channel will get a sense of what they might be facing if they don't evacuate for the next storm

AF303 has redeemed itself after two successful passes to cap off recon observations before landfall. Not sure what the two failures were all about.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

TWC just called landfall (Edit, I see above NHC did as well). Looks like a N wobble did just put Grand Isle into the RF inner eyewall.

So another landfall at peak strength....This also makes Ida the FIFTH Cat 4 or stronger landfall on the Gulf Coast since 2017! Insane!

Edit: Forgot about Irma's Cat 4 landfall on Key West.

Definately going to be interesting to see how New Orleans and points east fair in this storm, just being on the edge of worst wind. but with lots of comparisons to katrina, it can’t be overstated, these are very different storms. Ida Ts wind radius is about what Katrina’s Hurricane wind radius was. It’s hard to imagine but Kats TS wind field went from west of Vermillion bay to almost Apalapchicola. The surge will be undoubtedly bad but it should pale in comparison to the water that was pushed in Katrina. one thing I think will catch folks off gaurd is the difference in direction of wind and what that will do in areas north of the lake as well as areas of terrebonne and La Fouche, which escaped some of the worst Katrina surge. Saffir Simpson scale is nearly useless when it comes to water risk, surge or freshwater. Seems like most of the infrastructure improvements could hold back the current forecasts but watching closely.

Quick Question: Are first responders required to stay on grand isle during this storm because I just heard police chief say they are seeing things being washed away and you could tell he was scared I know they might be there to help once the storm passes but a little extreme to put there own lives at risk as well.

I heard that, too. It’s heartbreaking. No other words for it.

Even crazier between 1970-2016 if I'm not mistaken there were only three (Hugo, Andrew, Charley) US Cat 4+ landfalls period.

Very scary now (but not surprising, I'm afraid) that TWC isn't able to re-establish contact with the police bunker there while they're in the inner eye wall. Praying for those first responders and all in Grand Isle for whatever reason.
