Not many remember but the night that Katrina hit everyone, not in the area went to bed thinking they had dodged a bullet. The real disaster began hours after the storm when the levees failed, The situation right now with the power is sounding very bad but will likely not be apparent how bad for hours.

I’m in northeast Tennessee and already preparing. My home was built in 1863 and we are getting a new roof. Just not before the Ida rains come lol. I’m worried for our area.

That's awful. Can anyone with local knowledge confirm what this means for the pumps. Do they have backup generators?

Some of these images from Laplace earlier are crazy with that surge, this storm really held it together, hard to believe it made landfall almost 10 hours ago and still a Major

Also in Andrew same thing , the early reports were that it may not have been that bad until news and pictures
came out of Homestead, Fla
I have to unfortunately assume this Storm is going to have some very severe consequences when
there is a chance to access the damages and Human toll.

This is not so unusual after any storm really. It’s at least 1/4 covered at any time of the year because of the way the beach was built.

Yeah, having driven on NC-12 in the Outer Banks a number of times, I wasn't surprised at all to see this, nor did I consider it extreme damage. Just trying to post photos I'm seeing of what's happening throughout the region, not only in the hardest hit areas.

It's just so sad because it didn't have to be this way...a place like a nursing home should have been evacuated based on what happened after Katrina.

According to the local news, their backup is entergy grid that suffered a catastrophic failure. Apparently the entire parish is completely off line

I'm thinking this power grid situation might lead to something terrible. I wouldn't think there's enough generators to keep the pumps going. This storm is going to test those levees to the max. Hopefully they hold

Well, we can be certain that Ida will be retired by the WMO in 2022 based on what has happened in Louisiana. Hopefully the hospitals in NOLA find a way to keep the ICU patients alive when the generators run out of gas.

By the way, this reminds me, the best thing about watching ABC World News tonight was David Muir's interview with a doctor at Children's Hospital in New Orleans about the team of doctors (many quite young) who were staying behind to care for hospitalized children. Most of those with families evacuated their partners and children to Atlanta and then returned to NOLA to be there to care for the kids. So moving. So grateful for all the caregivers and first responders (and the Cajun Navy, etc.) who stayed willingly to serve those in need throughout this storm. THANK YOU ALL.

And after getting all that surge from the lake ahead of the eye, Laplace is now in the strongest part of the eyewall.

In this live stream from Hurricanetrack, at about -1:18:00 you can see the incredible rush of surge at Frenier Landing at the west end of Pontchartrain.

I think in the coming days we’re going to see photos of even more widespread catastrophic wind damage from Ida; something to the degree of which is unrivaled by anything (in the ConUS) in many seasons bar Michael. Ida’s unexpected duration as a major will just have exacerbated this.

Whew, some of that looks as bad or worse than the vids I saw of Michael. Starting around 4:00 and when he's yelling tornado, I'm wonder if it's actually one of the mesos we saw on satellite.
