INMET and CPTEC, official Brazilian meteorological institutes, calling the system "Subtropical Storm".

Not Catarina level but I would say this is the most organized/impressive SATL storm since Catarina in 2004. Awesome stuff.

I believe that in some phases RAONI was tropical, even if quite pulsating. Metoffice considered it a Tropical Storm,
and probably in the North Atlantic it would have been classified equally:

Seems to be weakening and probably dissipating now as just a naked swirl, not surprising given the time of year and water temperatures down there. Its existence this time of year is remarkable; its intensity outright jaw dropping. Just don't see something that strong or organized in the basin often at all especially in winter. Fascinating that the most intense Atlantic storm of the year thus far has been in the South Atlantic lol.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

I sincerely hope this storm is revisited in the future. This was not a subtropical storm and was probably a Cat 1 hurricane at peak.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.
