If your look at this from Tampa's perspective who hasn't had a Major Hurricane in over 100 years then yes, it is "The Storm of the Century".

AF recon shows a pretty clear double eye wall on the southwest side at least (double wind maxima). This is apparent on radar as well.

Latent heat that will surely caused the core temp to rise pretty quickly.

I haven't seen a tower heat up the core that quickly

Yes, this could be a huge disaster and something Tampa has not experienced in a very long time. Bad call trying to say the news is hyping this, I think they delayed until the track was well set, now it's time to get people to understand this could be pretty darn bad.

for Tampa it is absolutely the storm of the century, no major hurricane hits since 1921

Sure, I saw that earlier, not even a Cat 1 since the 40's. So maybe the headline should say "Storm of the Century for Tampa"?

I think this conversation is trying to get political and it should probably stop.

The SW side also has really weak winds for a mid-960s system. I just don’t get Ian. Its structural evolution has made very little sense.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

This absolutely is the storm of the century for Tampa if the models and nhc track pan out. Surge in a surge prone area plus the potential feet of rain if it stalls.

Cloud tops getting colder in the tower as well.
Upper troposphere cooling quickly as the sun goes down.
This should really strengthen the tower due to a higher lapse rate and in turn rapidly heat the core.

Sure, I understand that. Many new Floridians lately and long term Tampa/St. Pete residents don't have experience with a direct hit. As a former news director (long time ago), I'd have a problem with that blanket statement coming out of my newsroom. But that was the 1980's and early 90's. Things have changed and this sort of hyperbole is considered SOP now. But if that what you think it needs to get people's attention, then I suppose it's for the best.

Agree that the headline makes sense for Tampa and also that this is not the place for it but nothing about it was political imo.

If anyone is curious about the basic thermodynamics of VHT's firing around the center of the storm and how it causes strengthening, this is a really easy to understand video and visualization.

It’ll even out when that burst gets all the way around.

The normal straight-ahead passes through the eye are one thing, but I wonder what it's like doing a pass like the one AF just did, turning and looking for the center while winds are rapidly changing direction. Must be something else. Especially at night.
