There was an image earlier that had Charley's eye and eyewall easily fitting within Ian's eye, probably with about 50% of the eye still being clear!

Charley was a pretty small storm to be fair.

Okay that is at least reasonable. He forgot the the eye / eyewall part.

Best joke I’ve heard the whole thread.

A real somewhat funny story - My middle son is named Ian. He’s 11 and very into meteorology like I am. Has his own weather station. He was incredibly thrilled to have this storm as his namesake until a day ago when it hit him the amount of people will be harmed. Also - his 12th birthday is Saturday and he realized he may have unknowingly wished himself a birthday with no power.

Sounds like what happens when you give your children an I name.

Just had a 69 kt gust at Punta Gorda, which is not yet in the eyewall. Also winds coming around to almost due east.

I live in Lake Wales, near Winter Haven. I'm not home right now, I'm watching from afar while in Philadelphia for work. I'm extremely worried and while I'm glad I don't have to ride it out it's hard watching from afar while friends and family are there and I can't do anything.

At 9,000 feet, 206.7mph in the southwestern eyewall. Ian isn't going down without a fight.

Sorry I just never follow what the criteria is to allow a storm to be retired. I just hear later on about so and so name being retired, but I never looked into it anymore.

I guess we could say the same for children with an A, C , K or S name? We’ll soon have no alphabet left. We’ll have to resort to images like “The artist formally known as Prince.”

Imagine yourself in the eyewall of a borderline Cat 5 and hearing the faint drone of a P3 flying overhead. That would be surreal.

Recon at operational altitude and just entered the outer bands of Ian. About 150 miles from Ian's eye.

Will there be any use of SFMR this close to land? Especially with the shallow sloping bathymetry (sp) of the gulf coast? Bet every high reading gets flagged.

Jennieanddavis On Tiktok is one of the AF pilots that’s been doing flights into Ian.

Recon descending to operational altitude. Looks like they are setting up a NW to SE pass.

I'm not a meteorologist, I'm an electronics engineer. While I can probably fix your toaster oven, you're not going to learn about storms from me!

New Mexico had no hurricanes. Then I moved to NC right before Fran.....

I think SEFL metro areas are going to see some nasty spiral bands this afternoon based on the radar and the fact we are getting some intermittent sunshine
